Ullswater view

  • Wild camping with spectacular views of Ullswater in the Lake District
  • Pooley Bridge five minutesā€™ drive, and Lowther Castle 20 minutes
  • Spring water and portable toilets on site; pub 10 minutesā€™ walk
When it comes to the Lake District, there are many spectacular views, but the one from Ullswater View Campsite is right up there as a serious contender for a prize. The name gives it away somewhat, as this off-grid, wild camping site does indeed have spectacular views over Ullswater Lake and the surrounding forested mountains. At 20 minutesā€™ drive from the shops of Penrith in Cumbria, this is a spot to really get back to basics; portable toilets, rubbish bins and water from a natural spring are the only facilities youā€™ll find on site ā€“Ā so at this juncture please note that means no showers and no electricity. Part of the mown camping field is on an incline (all the better to admire those lake views), and due to the angle of the entrance gateway, youā€™ll need to drive up the lane and turn around before entering the site. The track leading to the pitches is not accessible to low-slung cars either. Having said all that, the site does have a wonderful setting, itā€™s dog-friendly (as long as your four-legged pal is kept on a lead), and itā€™s 10 minutesā€™ scenic walk from a cosy pub serving good food and beer. Staying here also puts you a handy five minutesā€™ drive from all the sporting action on Ullswater itself. There are firepits for hire and logs for sale on site if you'd like to spend the eve around a fire.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The views were spectacular with plenty of space to choose your pitch. The opportunity to hire a firepit was very welcome and Sophie was always on hand when needed. A very friendly and welcoming place, full of like minded people who just want to enjoy the outdoors. We would definitely recommend.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location and view was great, and campsite was spacious. A text from Sophie was perfect to guide us on how to get to camp, and she also introduced herself so I knew we could contact her mobile if we had any issues.

Disliked: Unfortunately a large group came later in the evening and played loud music right next to our tent. I understand that this canā€™t be controlled easily but it did affect our stay. Also, only two portable toilets shared by men and women. They didnā€™t flush easily and certainly smelt!

Liked: We stayed here for 1 night and it was absolutely fab, amazing views from the site and lovely family running it! BBQs were great on the site. A quick walk down the road to the pub for a drink or a 10 minute walk down to the lake. Overall lovely.

Local attractions

Drive down to Pooley Bridge (five minutes by car) at the head of Ullswater for yomps along the Ullswater Way encircling the lake. Father south, stop off at the National Trust car park (10 minutes) and walk up to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, inspiration for the poem ā€˜The Somnambulistā€™ by William Wordsworth, written in 1833. Experienced hikers may care to drive to Patterdale (15 minutes) and clamber up Helvellyn for spectacular Lake District views, while others may settle for a stately voyage around Ullswater aboard the historic steamboat ā€˜Lady of the Lakeā€™ from Glenridding (15 minutes), itself a pretty lakeside village with tea rooms and souvenir shops. Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has imposing and photogenic ruins of a massive mansion as well as parterres and parkland to wander, or you can buy marmalade ā€“ reputed to be the best in the world ā€“ at Dalemain Historic Mansion and Gardens. If you hit a rainy day, catch a film at Rheged (both 10 minutes).
