  • Easy access to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines
  • Pool, paddling pool and bar-restaurant on site

It's quite easy to roam wild from Wild Rose Park. For not only is this lovely little site set deep in Cumbria's Eden Valley with all manner of divine walks, hamlets and villages on the doorstep, it has very handy access to areas that holidaymakers come from very afar to see.

The Lake District, the North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales are all niftily accessible from Wild Rose, along with exceedingly handsome market town Appleby-in-Westmorland near by and opps for sporty days out at local golf courses.

You should also settle down for a railway trip on the Settle-Carlisle Line, one of the most spectacularly scenic in the country – and a picnic at nearby High Force waterfall should be simply smashing too.

Beautifully kept, clean tidy park with excellent facilities. The diner offers a range of home cooked dishes (not your average microwave meals) and there is plenty of choice. The people running it and working there have it absolutely spot on, so friendly and welcoming.

    Disliked:

The only thing I would add here is that a key drop for departure would be helpful. We just had to hand ours into the shop.

A nice site but would have liked to see more facilities for young children, in particular the play area could be improved

    Disliked:

Toilet/shower facilities need updating. Toilets were always dirty ( not the fault of the site I know and is down to people not cleaning up after themselves)

    Park and pub, surrounding areas.

    Disliked:

Visited here a couple of years ago and it was lovely but seems to have gone a bit down hill.
We were given a pitch for our tourer which was described as hard standing plus grass. Unfortunately our ‘grass’ was just mud and rocks! All other pitches seemed to be ok, although small.
We usually use the toilet and shower in our caravan, but due to a problem with a leaky tap we used the site facilities until we got this fixed. When we got there on the Tuesday the ladies toilets didn’t have any soap in any of the dispensers. I mentioned this to reception who said they would sort it. Finally they put soap in 1 dispenser on the Friday!!! Toilets and showers were old, run down and filthy! Actually felt cleaner before having a shower in there!
Can’t beleive that they are charging £35 per night. Appleby and the surrounding areas are lovely but we won’t be coming back to this site.

The caravan was amazing! We stayed in a Platinum van and it was well worth the extra money! We only had dinner once in the bar, which was very nice and reasonably priced. The shop was great for top up bits and pieces. It's a beautifully maintained site, very clean. I can't comment on the children's facilities or the pool, it was a little cold for a swim. We will be back again next year for a break.

    Disliked:

We loved everything available but there are 2 things that would be nice. We would have liked to have had breakfast at the restaurant but that is not available. Also, I think an adult bar area would be good for guests staying without children.

Friendly staff and well maintained site, let down by poor showers/WC’s 05/31/2019

    Swimming pool area and bar/restaurant

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower facilities were disgusting. The gents particularly; leaking urinals, dirty toilets and the toilet disposal was blocked and full!
There was no disinfectant or water in the mop bucket to clean the showers after use in the Ladies and toilet paper on the floor. When we arrived on Saturday morning one of the soap dispensers was empty, by Monday morning all 4 were empty!!
We understand it’s the people who use the facilities that make the mess but they definitely need to be cleaned and maintained more frequently.

Advertised heated swimming pool, freezing cold. Card payments only behind the bar and restaurant. Not good if you're like me and budget your stay. Can't really budget when paying by card all the time.
Showers and toilets are in need of upgrade. Water to hot for children.

Local attractions

Wild Rose Park's nearest town, Appleby-in-Westmorland, is as cute as you'd expect from Cumbria – it was once a fiercely defended border stronghold from the time when the English and the Scots were wrangling, but is now a sedate and scenic market town with an 18-hole golf course, indoor swimming pool, individual shops and old traditional pubs (the best type).

And it also has a castle, and an ancient church, both linked by the also-exceedingly scenic tree-lined main street of Appleby. The church, St Lawrence, is open all year for services, but for the castle, those wishing to have a nosy will need to book tickets for a tour from the Appleby tourist information centre as the castle is now privately owned.

From Appleby, take the Settle-Carlisle Line through the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines for a very pretty day trip; the full run is 73 miles, but if you only have time for one leg of it, go towards Settle, to pass Ribblehead and the Ribblehead Viaduct.

The Eden river, also as spectacularly scenic as you'd expect in Cumbria, has a lot to do along/in it and its tributaries – fishing, naturally, but also canoeing, boating, birdwatching or simply wandering along its beaut banks.

Also in the area, have a look at the Lakeland heritage centre Rheged in Penrith and Tullie House in Carlisle, go swinging among the trees at Glenridding Forest or explore historical houses, family attractions and loads more: call into the Wild Rose Park reception or to the park tourist information room for top tips.

Must see

  • High Force Waterfall (13.3 miles)
  • The Rheged Centre (14.4 miles)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (15.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (8.8 miles)
  • Townend (20.4 miles)
