  • Touring pitches on a small farm-style site in rural Cheshire
  • On the edge of the Peak District, a 10-minute drive from Leek
  • Half an hour from Buxton, Stoke-on-Trent and Alton Towers
Scouring the web for a serene space to spend a few nights away in your caravan or motorhome? Hightail it to Heaton House Farm for a stint in stunning countryside on the edge of the Peak District National Park. This site is set amid 165 acres of grounds with views across the lovely landscapes of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire from grass pitches that have been reinforced with strong subterranean mesh so they'll be nice and sturdy under your wheels. There’s much to do around this gorgeous getaway spot in Rushton Spencer, including taking walks across the rocky ridge of The Roaches (20 minutes' drive) or heading to the site's sister pub in the village 25 minutes' walk away. The pub is next to a lovely scenic walk that will take you to Rudyard Lake (otherwise 10 minutes’ drive). For an adrenaline rush, head to Alton Towers theme park (half an hour) or stay closer by at the Madrenaline Activity Centre (15 minutes’ walk) for archery, skybowing, axe throwing, Segway racing and – perhaps the highlight – rolling down a hill in a sphere. The park is also half an hour’s drive from Buxton to the north and Stoke-on-Trent to the south. Pubs and restaurants aplenty are a cinch to source for eats within a six-mile radius, including in the market town of Leek (10 minutes). Toilets and showers are available, and there are water and Elsan points for use. Please note that this site operates a wedding venue, so there may be some noise from guests leaving events.

Local attractions

When pottering around the Peak District, don’t miss the postcard-pretty villages. Leek (10 minutes’ drive) is a first-rate spot to kick off explores – as its nickname 'Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands' suggests. Wander along the cobbled market square and scan the buildings for detailing from the Arts and Crafts design era. When it’s time to fuel up on food, peruse the menus at independent pubs and restaurants or grab grub to go from one of the stalls in the restored Victorian Butter Market. Buxton (30 minutes) is another fine place for foodies and also appeals to history buffs with its genteel Georgian spa town architecture. Craving the countryside? Get your fix at the Victorian garden in the National Trust’s Biddulph Grange Country Park (15 minutes). Planted with horticultural specimens from all around the world, it’s a fascinating spot for a stroll. For nature that’s a little less manicured, dawdle across the Dovedale stepping stones in a valley that leads up to Thorpe Cloud hill (40 minutes’ drive). After taking in the views across the bumpy landscape, trot off for 20 minutes over to Ilam, a tiny village with a tiptop country estate for ambles beside the clear river in 158 acres of parkland before rounding off the trip with treats at the tearoom.

Liked: Hosts were accommodating and let us arrive early so that we could pitch up early in time for my toddler’s nap time. Facilities were clean and some of the best decorated we have stayed at. Local pub with good food and friendly service (and a discount for residents of this site).

Liked: Heaton house was so helpful when I realised I’d messed up my dates. Because of the weather the pitches were moved onto hard standing which was great. Thanks to all the staff

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review Ros! It was great to welcome you back to the venue. Hope to you see you again soon. Kind regards, Lindsey

Liked: Nice quiet stopover within walking distance of Rudyard Lake if you want a nice easy walk and 2 pubs. Coming back we stayed on the track and ate at the Knot Inn (really good food and 10% off with a leaflet from the site). The shower was a proper one and very clean. Bad communication meant we got stuck in the mud but the owner pulled us out (after giving us a proper "Basil Fawlty" telling off!) So if you receive an email and your pitch is on the grass check 1st!

Disliked: The walk down to the pub/lake is on a country road. It's not very busy and there is a grass verge to stand on to allow cars to pass but we chose to get a taxi home from the pub as it was dark.

From the manager: Thank you for your 8/10 review! We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stopover and the local pub The Knot Inn. Unfortunately with the vast amount of rain we received over the duration and before your stay, it did result in us having to change your pitch number last minute, however, we are happy to hear the owner was able to pull you out and the new pitch was more suitable. Thank you for your kind words regarding the shower. Kind regards, Harriet

Clean facilities, but beware of pitching in the mud and rain.

Liked: The facilities, the proximity to the venue.

Disliked: The hardstanding is anything but. However Mick was great about towing us out.

From the manager: Thank you for your 8/10 review. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We are pleased to hear that you found our facilities clean and that they are located close to the pitches. With regards to the pitches type, I have checked our listing, and the pitches are listed as grass and not hard-standing however they do have a reinforced grass meshing underneath which does help to maintain the ground however with all the wet weather we have experienced recently the ground is inevitably very saturated. We will pass on your thanks to Mick, the owner, who helped to tow you out! We do hope that you will visit us again in the future. Kind regards Jo

Liked: Spacious pitch, spotless toilets/shower. Great location.

Disliked: Be aware this is a wedding venue. Music plays til midnight voices way after that.

From the manager: Thank you for your 10/10 review! We are so pleased to hear that found our pitches are spacious and the facilities were spotless, I will let the housekeeping team know. Yes, the location is amazing, with such a great base for exploring the local area with so much to see and do! Yes, we do primarily operate as a wedding venue however we have clearly stated on our listing that you may experience some noise until midnight and as guests leave the venue however we hope that this didn't cause too many issues and we do hope that you visit us again in the future. Liked: Large site plenty of room, fresh water was at the end of the pitches and there was washing up, toilet, shower, and toilet-emptying facititles, all really well maintained. Electric hook-up worked fine. Great value.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review Andy! We are so happy to hear that you found your pitch to have plenty of room and that you had all the required amenities. Our team works extremely hard to ensure that these are all maintained for our guests, so we are delighted to hear you noticed this. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future! Liked: After one family refused to move as they had taken both our pitch & theirs we were moved to a position that is not usually used, we had the best view on the site! Although no electric hook up at this new pitch heaton house rigged it up so we had electric, can’t fault them! Brilliant!

Disliked: My only criticism (this is me being very picky) is only one shower, however it’s immaculate!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your 10/10 review Tracey! I'm sorry to hear someone was in your pitch but very pleased to hear that our staff managed to rectify the situation and find you a space with such gorgeous views! We do only have the one shower as we find many of our guests are self sufficient within their vans but we do take your comments on board! I will pass on your feedback that you found the facilities immaculate, our team do work hard to maintain this. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards, Saskia
