  • Award-winning amenities, plenty of space and Chester Zoo ticket sales
  • Pool, fishing lakes, tennis, play area, games and dog-friendly café
Some people prefer to keep their holidays very basic and remote indeed. Some people do not – and seek a spot with excellent leisure facilities, spotless amenities and customer-friendly approach… the better to get on with the important aspects of a holiday without stressing about the essentials. If this too is you, make your way to Manor Wood Country Park in green Cheshire countryside, where there’s loads to do on site, and where the amenities are so immaculate they’ve been given awards. Off site is pretty pleasing too, as Manor Wood is an easily accessible 25 minutes’ drive from Chester, Chester Castle and Chester Racecourse – and Chester Zoo, so say the kids, who’ll doubtless point out that their grownups can buy zoo tickets on site too. The park is in a nicely rural setting, home to two fishing lakes that adults and families can cast off at, and to a vast range of leisurely options indoors and out. The outdoor pool opens from the beginning of May – whatever the weather; a climbing frame and play area are in the grounds and a games room with pool, table football and table tennis is indoors to take care of any inclement times. Back outside, tennis courts are available free of charge to all customers. A minute’s drive or half a mile’s stroll from Coddington, Manor Wood is surrounded by Cheshire and Nottinghamshire villages to pick up local produce and picnic bits and pieces. Make time/room too for a foray to the Lakeside Café on several occasions during your stay, for breakfast, snacks and light lunches to have indoors or outside while the kids investigate the play area; the café building also has free wifi, takeaway options and a small shop selling essentials and caravan supplies. Dogs are welcome too... so much so that they have their own section on the menu... Those who prefer things just a little quieter on their countryside holiday are invited to book from Monday to Friday in low season, to soak up the peaceful Cheshire surrounds in a more peaceful manner.

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay. The park is very nicely presented and the facilities are very clean and modern. The staff were very friendly. Our pitch was right by one of the parks which was very convenient, and the children enjoyed it, they also loved spotting the wildlife. We felt the park by the touring pitches could do with an update but the children had no complaints. Can't comment on the pool as we visited before it was open for the season. There was a decent WiFi signal for emails and general googling. Easy travelling distance to a few locations such as the ice cream farm.

Disliked: Some of the paths around the site had become very muddy and slippery due to recent weather. The dog walk had become a giant mud pit, so we gave up on this. Obviously the site can't help the wet weather and this is probably not as much an issue when it's drier. However I felt the newer paths were less likely to get muddy and the ones affected could be improved upon. However we still really enjoyed our stay, I will just make sure we all have wellies next time. It's clear the site is well maintained and constantly being improver upon, and we would definitely return.

Liked: On arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful , we didn’t bring the correct pegs for the floor pitch , the caretaker of the site gave us some to use on our stay so we could get our awning up for the weekend ! And also offered us storm straps to keep the awning up in the weather ! He was really helpful and friendly! We had a lovely meal in the cafe on our stay (a little bit over priced so we only eat there twice but was very nice) the toilets/showers and washing facilities were spotlessly clean and well maintained the best we’ve seen and used on any campsite ! The WiFi was great we was there in storm Kathleen so did go off a few times but just because of the weather! A 5 miniute drive into a little village were there’s shops and restaurants which are all dog friendly ❤️, there’s a little games room for the kids which kept them happy for a few hours while it rained , we love to have a walk and even tho we had to drive 5 minutes down the road we found some amazing walks ! My little girl loved going out on the evening and watching all the bunny’s and rabbits running around the caravan 🤭! We’d definitely stay again ! Thanks for a lovely weekend

Disliked: If we came again we’d book the better pitch for that bit extra £ , rather than a graval!

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Clean facilities, food was reasonable. Malcolm the "caravan guy" very helpful.

Disliked: Pitches were flooded, reception showed very little interest, we had booked 6 days but those that booked 3 days were prioritised on the non flooded pitches. We paid for a fully serviced pitch, services were on other side, we had to buy longer waste and water pipe the next day. Wouldn't dig a trench to allow the water to drain so it flooded our awning area. Reception staff were unhelpful. Shop and cafe shuts at 4pm. Shame as the site is very well maintained and clean, just lacked customer service ( apart from Malcolm who lent us his personal hose pipe)

Liked: The flat pitch. The lakes. The cafe - although not yet open! The options for entertaining youngsters - tennis, game room, swimming pool - although not yet open either.

Disliked: Maybe not enough bins for dog poo. Also I like being able to segregate rubbish - feel bad for the people who have to segregate it later.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Dog walking area. Kids play grounds

Disliked: The entire campsite was a complete mud bath as it had been raining. Weirdly there were so many dead frogs on the tracks, probably related to the rain, that had been run over, it was very gory! The main issue was the facilities, the toilet/shower block was freezing cold and filthy. I don’t know why it wasn’t heated properly in February. The showers were dark and unclean. I found a newt in one of them. I walked to the other shower block which was better. But obviously you had to walk through all the mud to get there so it was a bit pointless! Push start showers which lasted less than 5 seconds were annoying. The games room - filthy and cold! Couldn’t find a ball to go with the ping pong table and you had to pay to use the pool table. No seats or anything to sit down in there. For the price, I expected it to be better.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do around Manor Wood for those days you’re not mooching around Chester (although do mooch around Chester for some considerable time too.) Drive about five minutes’ south for walks around the green space lying between Stretton and Clutton; a golf course and Stretton Watermill are here to stop off at. Beeston Castle, 20 minutes’ drive away just outside Tarporley, is a site of fortress ruins on a sandstone plain with spectacular views – across eight counties and over to Wales. Kids now revolting after watermill and castle time? The rides, farm and many flavours of The Ice Cream Farm adventure park are within 15 minutes’ drive.
