Sunny View of our Camping Field

General

  • Popular and peaceful countryside site a short drive from York
  • On the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride
  • Flowers and wine available on request

Seeking serenity in scenic countryside but get antsy if you’re not close to the bright lights? Holds that thought.

City, countryside, a coast to coast cycle route and, er, free-range and curious chickens are all features of very popular and very fab Yapham Holds Farmhouse Campsite, which will see sorted those who ditheringly fancy both urban and rural on one break.

The farm is nicely rooted in rural North Yorkshire countryside that verges on the Yorkshire Wolds, but is a grand and easy drive into also very fab York (even more simples, Park and Ride to York from the bus station near the farm, which has additional services to Beverly and Hull.)

Bring your bike too if poss: Yapham Holds is right on the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride from Morecambe to Bridlington and a couple of miles from the six cycle routes weaving around the countryside from the nearby market town of Pocklington.

Yapham Holds is popular for its added little touches as well as its location, like flowers and wine available on request, flowers and handwash in the spotless loo and shower block, and the knowledgeable welcome from hosts Steve and Jan who can advise on all there is to do in the area from museums to York ghost walks.

And the chickens? Get supplies from Pocklington two miles away and fire up the barbecue pitchside or from the decking of a camping pod to see the poultry wobble enthusiastically forth: they seem to be very much sorted in this lovely location too.

The owner welcomed us on our arrival and gave us an option to select our pitch site. The grass is really well looked after and very flat. This site offers the basic needs for camping. The owner lives on the site and is always available. Washing pots is easy. Toilets are very clean but just one toilet for male and one for females. One shower for male & one for females. The site is small so this isn't an issue. The pitches are very large. We had neighbours on both sides and throughout our stay heard no noise from either. If we're in the area we would stay again with no hesitation at all. If WiFi is available it wasn't printed on the sheet given to use on our arrival.

    Disliked:

Not near anything in an easy walking distance for a night stroll. Although a taxi could be used which wouldn't be much from the nearest village.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review & photos. We're pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.Our location is in the countryside as advertised with the market town of Pocklington a steady 40 min walk. Pocklington has numerous restaurants, bars, shops & supermarkets. Taxi's are about £8. Unfortunately we don't provide Wifi as we are promoting leaving it all behind to enjoy the peace & quiet in the countryside.

Everything! Small site that is determined to remain small. We arrived on a quiet night with low occupancy and had a very tranquil stay. At the weekend the site was at full capacity and it was so quiet and peaceful - no difference in activity, brilliant.
The pitches were perfect, very flat with lush grass & electric points easily accessible.
Location was good, Pocklington has an excellent butchers (Laveracks) and a great little delicatessen (No 6 The Pavement). You can feed yourself very well if you wish to bbq.
Nearest pubs were excellent. Had great food at The Fleece at Bishop Wilton and a very good lunch at the Carpenters Arms at Fangfoss.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. All our TV's are checked after every vacation. Had you brought it to our attention we would have done our best to resolve it. We have had no complaints since!
We would have very much appreciated that you informed us that one of your party had been sick inside & outside the the pod during your stay leaving it for us to find & clear after your departure.

Local attractions

Pretty market town Pocklington is well-stocked with pubs, tearooms, restaurants and gift shops as well as supermarkets, but we’re especially impressed to see it also comes with a newly completed skate park for guests travelling with youngsters or who want to revisit their childhood roots/skinned elbows.

More placid but also very impressive pursuits lurk among the lily ponds and lakes of lovely Burnby Hall Gardens just outside Pocklington: the UK’s national collection of hardy water lilies lives here, but we think kids will be more open-mouthed among the giant fish of the gardens’ two lakes which take food directly from the fingers of awestruck guests.

Step into the Stewart Museum afterwards for a look at the collections of former hall owner Major Percy Stewart’s eight grand tours in the early twentieth century – lucky old Major S crossed every continent on his travels and hauled back quite the collection of artefacts, many of which are now on display.

North Yorkshire, York and its surroundings are a top spot for holidaymakers who like historical houses and museums; outside York, award-winning Eden Camp on a former POW camp near Malton tells many tales of World War II, and both Harrogate and Leeds around an hour’s drive away from Yapham Holds and crammed with historical highlights.

In York, hang out with the Vikings at the Jorvik Centre or take a wander around the National Railway Museum or the Yorkshire Air Museum on Halifax Way, the biggest independent air museum in the country. We’re sure we don’t need to mention that’s it’s essential to see York Minster and York Castle Museum too…?

Fifteen miles north, eighteenth century Castle Howard in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a right royal day out by bus from York’s Station Avenue or by train from the main station.

Towards Hull, dive into another topping attraction at award-winning marine centre and aquarium The Deep at Sammy’s Point, where seven species of shark swim among the thousands of sea critters in the aquarium tanks.
