  • Family-run site in a rural location with views of the Yorkshire Wolds
  • A 10-minute drive from Pocklington and 20 minutes from York
  • Spacious and level pitches; barbecue hut available for hire
Set in the green North Yorkshire countryside, Egremont Pines is a quiet family-run site with facilities and an environment geared towards families and couples looking for relaxed rural breaks. Nikki, David and other members of the friendly site team will help you settle in at Egremont Pines and have plenty of insider info about the surrounding area. The site looks out onto the Yorkshire Wolds, a range of low-lying hills with a number of excellent walking routes. You may also spot some of the site's pedigree alpacas wandering about in neighbouring fields. Site facilities include showers, toilets, a laundry room and a washing-up space, as well as a barbecue hut you can hire for celebrations, meals or special events. Barbecues can be set up elsewhere in the grounds of Egremont Pines, but please do your bit to keep the grass green by raising any flames far off the turf. The historic market town of Pocklington is a 10-minute drive away, while the ancient city of York is about 20 minutes by road. Wilberfoss (five minutes) is even closer and makes a handy pit-stop if you're looking to call in at a local shop.

Liked: The whole family loved our trip. This is the second year we have stayed here and we will definitely be back again. Great, flat pitches. Very good wash room facilities. Perfect for visiting York's many attractions. The kids all love it as there's good room for them to play and they all enjoy seeing the chickens that are on site. We were even allowed in to see the young chicks which our two year old loved. Already excited to be back next year!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Flat pitches, bbq hut is a great idea (didn’t use but had a nosey), love the tree house and animals, quiet, friendly staff

Disliked: One shower cubicle each for male and female, staff weren’t at reception when we signed in and took a while to turn up with no answer on either mobile numbers, no toilet roll or hand towels for the first night, cash only. Quite a basic campsite, there wasn’t a shop or anything on site.

Local attractions

Stock up on snacks in the pretty village of Wilberfoss (five minutes' drive) before heading out into the Yorkshire Wolds, where there is an array of circular and linear walks, including the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Nearby Pocklington (10 minutes) may also be a popular option – it's home to a public leisure centre, an arts centre and Burnby Hall Gardens, where over 100 types of waterlily are on display in landscaped grounds. For tales of dogfights and derring-do, set out for the Yorkshire Air Museum (a quarter of an hour), a pet-friendly aviation centre on the historic site of RAF Elvington. Other easily accessible attractions include the York Maze (15 minutes) – the UK's biggest, no less. If you'd rather limit your chances of getting lost, though, you could just as easily take a guided tour around York's storied city centre (20 minutes). For more impressive old buildings, head to Castle Howard (30 minutes) with its farm shop, palatial manor and boating lake, or try Nunnington Hall (40 minutes), a National Trust-managed property with 450 years of history that's a bit more manageable in scale.
