  • Rural dog-friendly site on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate
  • In the Yorkshire Dales, a short walk from Simon's Seat and the river
  • Alpacas on site and within walking distance of two pubs and a café
Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Jo and Rich, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

Liked: Location is incredible, the river walk to the Craven Arms (beautiful pub with great food) is a must. Shower block facilities are clean and very user friendly. WiFi also covers the camp brilliantly.

Liked: Amazing views, the pitches are on different levels so everyone can get a good view. The Alpacas are great. Very clean and a well kept site. Friendly owners. The walk along the river to the pub is fantastic. A great site with everything you need.

Disliked: No where to put your clothes to keep them dry whilst having a shower, only a few hooks.

Liked: Picturesque setting Clean well maintained toilets and showers Dog friendly site Coffee and pastries served in the mornings. Love Brownies Barn shop and cafe right next door for breakfasts, lunch and delicious brownies. We originally booked for 1 night and ended up staying there for our 2nd night too.

Disliked: The site could do with a better stocked shop, there were items on shelves but I use the term shop in the loosest sense of the word as you couldn't even get bread/milk/teabags. We were able to get tea and milk from the Brownie Barn nearby which was a lifesaver! A chip van or small takeaway on site would have made this perfect.

Liked: Loved how peaceful the site was and that there were toilet blocks dotted all over. Very close to two lovely local pubs and lovely walks

Disliked: The fridges were only near reception so from where we were it would have been a treck to get anything from the fridge. The toilet block near us was initially locked due to it being fixed. However we weren't told this at reception. It did eventually reopen, but a bit of communication would have been good

Liked: The location of this campsite is perfect for those looking for a quiet escape. Loads of beautiful walks, quaint villages, fantastic pubs - truly something for everyone. The facilities are great and the staff are helpful. I would definitely visit again.

Disliked: The pitches were very muddy (which I know is sometimes unavoidable this time of year, but still good to note), and there was no hot water at the lower washing up point.

Local attractions

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
