General

  • Quiet and family-run working farm in the Washburn valley
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed

The land around North Yorkshire's Breaks Fold Farm is so stunningly scenic that it's often used by directors from the small screen: Emmerdale and DCI Banks have both been filmed in this lush locale in the spectacular Washburn Valley (and the local River Washburn lies within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

If you're coming to these comely parts for hikes, the farm is close to all levels of them at the Yorkshire Dales National Park; for old old structures, famed Yorkshire highlights like Fountains Abbey and Pateley Bridge are easily reached, and for towns and cities, pubs and shopping, Harrogate, Skipton and Leeds are all well placed to get to from here: as friendly owner Richard says, there are absolutely loads of things to do within a 20-minute drive.

A quiet and family-run farm, Breaks Fold overlooks Thruscross Reservoir and has easy access to the cycling and fishing of the valley as well as more hikes around the woods and the water. It's a simple but clean and well-maintained site, with toilets and free hot showers as well as the facilities for ice pack freezing and gadget charging.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: you can buy firepits, logs and marshmallows from Richard and the team when you arrive for a reasonable extra charge.

Dogs are welcome on site but on leads only, please.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

This is a quiet site: if you wish to stay up partying this is not the right site for you.

Fully-serviced pitches are for caravans and motorhomes only. These pitches are not suitable for Campers (ie VW type campers). It is one unit per pitch only; no tents allowed on these pitches except from awnings or a small pup tent (extra charge for pup tent).

Toilets were nasty portacabins. Nice wooden ones would be more inline with the surroundings.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review. We do clearly advertise our facilities as they are. I’m quite upset you think they were nasty as we take great pride in cleaning and maintaining them to the highest standard, which other people have commented on. One day we will up grade them as we can afford to do so. We are good value basic site and we don5 want to end up having to bump up prices.

Very nice campsite, good quality and clean facilities, friendly atmosphere. The fire pits were a great bonus. Easy access to a beautiful local walk around the reservoir.

    Disliked:

Unlevel pitches. Can't move your car before 8am.

From the manager...

Thanks for review. You are welcome to park up near the info hut should you want to move your car on and off the field. We have these times for the safety and comfort of everyone. All the pitches are advertised as sloping, it’s the nature of the area and it isn’t an issue for the majority of people, due to the choice of pitches in our fields. If you wan5 flat it’s impossible to find around our area! Happy camping.

From the manager...

Thanks for the cracking review. We are trying to set up a WiFi web for customers to use, but it has proven complicated! Hopefully it will work fully next year. A lot of people do enjoy that disconnection. Digital detox! Happy camping.

Location, nature around, showers were good. Right next to a great reservoir hike.

    Disliked:

Slanting pitches, not having marked pitches - anyone just pitches wherever they want. Loud cows in the morning lol. Light for the washing up area didnt work, so difficult to see at night when trying to wash dishes. Toilets could be cleaned more frequently. Fridge&freezer didnt work properly at all - should replace them with decent ones.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. Part of our ethos is a natural experience which does not include marked pitches. All our pitches are advertised clearly as sloping. Over the time we have done this it has never been a problem as there is loads of room in our field. We are not a commercial site, I cannot emphasize this enough and therefore people should not come expecting that. I do agree that the light needs fixing above the washing up sink, however there is a flood light just around the corner that lights up this area. The fridges and freezer do work and are checked weekly with a probe, however I cannot help that with them being opened and closed frequently that they are not performing to optimum temperature.

I am actually quite upset you thought our facilities were unclean as they get cleaned morning, lunch and evening. Much more than most sites and we are very particular about it. All of our customers comment on how clean our facilities are. If you thought things weren’t up to standard you should have come and told someone as we take great pride in having clean facilities.

I think maybe our campsite just does not suit your particular needs for camping, but we are not advertising as something we are not.

Many thanks and happy camping.

The man who welcomed us, helped us with our motor home (as 1st time owners!), he recommended we make little ramps as our MH was not on flat group. He went & got us them & helped. Then fetched us a little camp fire, marshmallows and sticks (£10). Very kind and helpful! It was wet and raining when we arrived so couldn’t get out much with 2 year old and 4 year old!! Didn’t bother walking to the park due to the heavy rain.

Surroundings and fire pit experience in the evening

    Disliked:

Difficulty in finding a point of contact on the site to enquire about the fire pit.

Being asked to keep the noise down by another customer when it was only 9pm. We were sitting round the fire chatting as a family to be asked to keep the noise down as their young child couldn’t get to sleep.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review. I will just say that we are not a commercial site and therefore we are sometimes out and about working on the farm. There is a large sign up on the information hut clearly stating that fire pits are brought around every evening between 6-7pm and I know I came around the field at 6.45 that evening. My mobile number is also on the side of the shed in case of emergencies should you need to contact me.

I’m sorry if somebody did ask you to stop talking, that is a bit unfair and you should have told me. We just ask for reduced volume, quiet voices between 10pm and 8am. It is kind of camping etiquette to respect each other.

Best wishes and happy camping.
