Foxhill Park: Peaceful rural site

General

  • Peaceful rural site 20 minutes' drive from York
  • Half an hour's drive from North York Moors National Park
  • Easy access from A64 and close to bus stops for day trips

City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Foxhill Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64.

From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’.

Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies.

No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: wifi access, a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

This was our first camping trip as a family of 5 (7 year old, 5 year old and a 2 year old). The campsite was fantastic and the wardens were very helpful. The pitches were a brilliant size and perfect for our stay.
The wash room facilities were very clean and regularly maintained. We particularly found the family washroom of great benefit as it allowed me to take all 3 children for a wash without feeling like we were struggling for space.
The area between all the pitches was also ideal for the children to play, without having to worry about their safety.
This is certainly a site we would visit again and recommend to friends and family.

The female site warden was rude and at 10.30pm on the Friday night and 11.30pm on the Saturday night approached our group (mixed age of adults from 30-60) and told us to disperse our group and go to bed!!! Our group were sat quietly, with no music on, chatting quietly and making no obviously noise!! Julie, tried to insinuate she could hear our group from her caravan at the opposite end of the site which I simply do not believe was true!! I’m a 40 year old woman who was last told to go to bed by my own mother when I was about 12 so I’m sure as hell not going to be told by julie to go to bed at 11.30pm on a Saturday night!!

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear our Wardens were upholding the site rules I.e. quiet time 10pm. This information is clearly shown on PitchUp and information given on arrival.
Unfortunately large groups often feel they are quiet but when you can be heard at the bottom of the field by other campers this was clearly not the case and unacceptable.

The wardens, Julie and Neil, went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We were camping with our daughter and her family of young children and it was their first time coming away with the tent since the youngest was born. Julie and Neil were always on hand and nothing was a problem. The facilities and site were excellently maintained and Julie came around the site at least once a day to make sure everything was ok.
Due to the situation with restrictions we had a last minute change of plan and Neil was happy for us to keep our caravan on site a few extra hours.
I will recommend the site to friends and family and will book again if I need a site near York. The location is close to a lot of great places to visit as a couple or a family.

Local attractions

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom.

For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types.

Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.

Must see

  • Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • The Arboretum - Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Treasurer's House (7.7 miles)
  • Goddards Garden (9.4 miles)
