General

  • Back to basics family-friendly stays on a working sheep farm
  • Beaches, castles, manor houses and shopping within half an hour
  • An hour from rambling Yorkshire's Moors, Dales and the North Pennines

Moonwalk your way to thriller hols at Billy Jeans Campsite, a family-friendly site on a working sheep farm five minutes’ drive from the village of Fishburn in the north-eastern county of Durham – and don’t forget your walking boots either…

This is a prime spot for lengthy rambling explores: start by following the routes around Escomb lake 30 minutes away, then wander further for strolls at Hamsterley Forest and tramping around the North York Moors National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, all within about an hour of the site.

If you prefer to use your legs for more wheely pursuits, stick around Hamsterley Forest for stunningly scenic mountain biking trails (rent a bike at Hamsterley if you don’t have your own). The kids will be happy here too, with horses to ride and a Gruffalo orienteering course to bring some magic back to the woods.

That should get the whole family pretty well tuckered out, not to mention craving some eats, so head back to site to get dinner grilling on the barbecue (supplies from Sedgefield, 10 minutes away, or the site shop selling food, drinks and other bits) or have a night out with pub or restaurant eats in one of the nearby villages.

Settle in next to the campfire for the rest of the evening while keeping an eye on the kids as they play in the open field, then turn in with nothing to disturb your sleep but the wind in the trees...

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The people there were really friendly and helpful, they made us feel welcome
They have a shop to buy basic supplies
You can rent out a fire pit and logs for a decent price which is really nice at night time
The site is spread out and spacious so you don't have to camp on top of anyone

    Disliked:

Only bad thing is the toilets- they're just porta-loos and like all porta's they're not the nicest place to do your business, as we were only there one night it wasn't a big deal for us.

The owners are very attentive and welcoming. It was so handy having a little shop on site which wasn’t there when we visited a few years back. The shop sells ice cream, pot noodles, sweets, keep sakes etc. You can hire a fire bit (which have been upgraded compared to last time) and a bag of wood which is really reasonable. The site welcomes all types of groups so it’s ideal for meeting up with a large group of friends or family. That being said there was a lot of noise in the early hours from a large family. There are plenty of portaloos around the site and some portable showers.

    Disliked:

All groups are welcome which is great if you’re wanting to party or whatever but this time we were pitched next to a rowdy family with dogs and children running wild. We were woken up at 5am by them both mornings but that isn’t a reflection on the owners.

Loved the buzz of the campsite. The easy going and no stress organisation and booking. Pitches are really big. Fab choice of campfires for good prices. Shop onsite too. Shower facilities also a great addition.

    Disliked:

As it was busy the toilets were over used by the second morning but quickly turned around.

Love the remote location. Basic campsite which is what we wanted. Plenty choice of porta loos and one toilet, which were well stocked with toilet roll. Porta shower available which we chose not to use.
Various taps for fresh water around site. Sinks for washing up and washing hands. There is a cabin to charge your phone with a small kitchen area but we didn't use this.
Loved our first night stay as it was less busy than our second night stay. Saying that, it was still a good vibe. Perfect for families. Site owner went around the site on our 2nd night and told the noisy campers to quieten down, which they did.
On site shop selling essentials was great. Fire pits to hire and logs to purchase were fantastic. Our fire pit was cleaned after our first nights stay. Bagged up rubbish left by your tent is removed daily.
Loved the kids quiz in the information leaflet, my daughter and I thought that was a nice touch. Spectacular sunsets (& thunderstorms). Pitches well spaced out, which had been a concern of mine, in this present climate.
Site owner is around a lot in the day checking that everything is OK but not intrusive . I camp on my own quite a bit and would feel safe here .

    Disliked:

Parents who can't control their children and blatantly ignore the rules of no water balloons to be used.

Too uneven and too noisy08/02/2020

Nice location. Friendly owners. Facilities basic e.g. porta loos and showers but were always clean and plenty of loo roll

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the field was very uneven with deep ridges throughout. Had to pitch sideways along the top of a ridge. It was more like a noisy festival/party site with several large groups blasting music til the early hours. (A group of 10 pitches turned up on the Friday, along with other large groups).

Local attractions

If your tastes skew more coastal than hilly, you’re in luck round here: venture seaward for beach days at Crimdon or Seaham (within half an hour's drive), with sandy strolls, pony rides and explores of half-buried World War II bunkers all available.

History buffs keen for more than that will have plenty else to keep them busy, from museums to castles to stately piles all around. Start way back when with a trip around the ruins of Binchester Roman Fort, then come closer to present day at the former strongholds of Barnard and Raby castles. For something more high society, try Moulton Hall, Crook Hall (and maze), Ormesby Hall and the ancestral home of the US’s first president George Washington at Washington Old Hall.

Get out of musty old corridors with a trip to the Beamish open air museum, telling the tale of life in the north east during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s, or time your stay to be around for Bishop Auckland’s Kynren, an open air show covering two thousand years of north-eastern history.

For urban days, the sights, sounds and shops of Durham, Darlington and Middlesbrough are all less than half an hour from base.

Must see

  • Hartlepool's Maritime Experience (7.8 miles)
  • Durham Coast (8.8 miles)
  • Durham Cathedral (9.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Ormesby Hall (13.2 miles)
  • Washington Old Hall (15.7 miles)
