  • Luxury bell tents on a Suffolk site 10 minutes' drive from Eye
  • Less than an hour's drive from the beaches at Southwold and Aldeburgh
  • Barbecues, firepits and outdoor seating provided
Seeking a Suffolk stay with proper personality? Each of the bell tents at Hill Farm, out in the countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Eye, bears the name of a real-life individual, in tribute to much-loved local Suffolk Punch horses (some of whose names you can still see on the stables in the farmyard too… don’t get confused and try to sleep in there though). And a most splendid tribute to the big beasts they are too, spread around the farm’s woodland area and provided with firepits, barbecues, cool boxes, camping chairs and picnic tables to help you max out those alfresco evenings. Guests can really afford to travel light when heading over here, for the tents have also been kitted out with bedding, towels, a gas cooker, kitchenware and games to play. That’s not it for the essentials, either – each tent has an electricity supply, and there’s a communal fridge/freezer for stashing supplies until barbecue hour comes around. Showers and toilets (including wheelchair-accessible facilities) are a short stroll from the tents, and wifi stretches all around the site for those that need a fix of the outside world. Of course, there’s plenty of outside world to explore close to the farm too – particularly if you’re in the market for a walk or a bike ride to one of the local country pubs (there are several of excellent options within a couple of miles…) Outings to Southwold, Aldeburgh, Norwich and Bury St Edmunds are easily doable too, as all are within an hour’s drive.

Local attractions

Start local explores by skipping out into the Suffolk countryside for a walk on the marked trails at Thornham Estate (five minutes’ drive) or taking off to Stonham Barns (15 minutes), where there’s a wildlife sanctuary, bird of prey centre and crazy golf course. Or perhaps you’d like a taste of country life in days of yore? Eye Castle (10 minutes) and the mighty fortress of Framlingham Castle (half an hour) are both good places to start, as are more recent additions to the scenery such as the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket (25 minutes) and the puffing engines of Bressingham Steam & Gardens (20 minutes). Looking a little further afield, the seaside resorts of Southwold and Aldeburgh are both less than an hour’s drive away, as is arty Snape Maltings, for marsh walks, concerts and craft shopping. For town times, the medieval towns of Lavenham and Long Melford are both within an hour and Bury St Edmunds is 40 minutes away.

Bell tent

Liked: Loved the clean facilities and extras like toys for children. Bins were emptied often so no smell. It was a lovely place and I would highly recommend it, also we went to the white horse inn for an evening meal and breakfast… both were amazing if you’d like somewhere local
