General

  • Peaceful site on a farm near the village of Hartest
  • Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth House within 15 minutes' drive
  • Back to basics pitches with running water and space for campfires

Bring on the chilled country days… peace and quiet are served up by the spade at Waldegrave Farm, a secluded site between the villages of Lawshall and Hartest.

Should you require their urban amenities, the towns of Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham and Long Melford are all around 15 minutes away by car. Rural relaxation is really the name of the game here though – all the classic ingredients are on hand for your stay on site, including hedgerows home to wildlife, a little brook flowing through the grounds and plenty of open space for not doing very much at all (although one might stretch to creating a campfire and cracking open a beer or two...?).

There’s little here to distract from the vibe: amenities on the basic pitches are limited to running water, but there are no toilets or showers on site.

Peeps in search of rural pursuits to fill their days can easily access lots of fab walks and bike rides from here, striding forth for half an hour for pints in a country pub, perchance, or wandering off to the local vineyard. Stately homes, gorgeous gardens and river boat trips are all within half an hour’s drive, or you could stay on the road for slightly less than an hour to mix with the clever folk of Cambridge.

Please note

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Pay in advance then pull into a rather smart farm house entrance with an outside tap - handy if hiking and backpacking which is now definitely an option I’m thinking about. Drive through a hedge gap and this site is essentially just fields and meadows. No facilities whatsoever. You only gave what you bring. There’s just plenty of flat space, peace and quiet, and a few campfire rings. If everything you want is to have the feeling of wild camping freedom but with permission for a fire, this is perfect. If you need a loo of any kind without planning a trip to a local pub or cafe, you’ll be disappointed. Personally, I absolutely loved this site, and grinned the whole time. I took everything with me like I’d never been there. Next time I will bring a mountain bike and explore more of the local lanes. A wonderful break in total peace, thank you.

Nothing at all. I love sites like this that resist the lure of bell tents and shepherd huts etc for a simple approach. Long may it last!

Owner really kind, told us where to go and to choose a pitch we liked.
The pitches are really spaced out, we didn’t see or hear anyone the whole evening / night / morning.
LOTS of room for tents, a car, chairs etc round the fire pit.
Woodland and meadows to explore around the pitches.
Very secluded and quiet, it really was like we were alone in the middle of nowhere.
Wild camping, but you feel very safe!
If you’re looking for somewhere out of the way, quiet, secluded and away from others.. this is the place.
(Note there is phone signal, internet and calls, but it’s poor and drops out. We liked this as we weren’t tempted to go on our phones - but if you needed to contact people you can manage to get some signal)
Overall - amazing stay and would definitely come back!

The absolute seclusion of the site!
Quarter of a mile down a hidden track we came to our spot, caught between a little Brook and a huge ancient oak to one side and a field on the other, nobody around, beautiful!
With a fire blazing we could watch the stars, and were serenaded by owls, one of which was in the old oak above us!
Next morning we breakfasted to the screeching of buzzards!
    Utterly magical.

    Disliked:

I fell in the Brook and got soggy socks, hardly the campsites fault and quite funny!

The very chilled vibe. Very private, no other campers when we were there but even if there were it would have been private because there was a good distance between pitches. Excellent place to camp. Good space for camp fires. Only around 40 min walk to Hartest with a great pub with veggie and vegan options.

This is the best campsite I've ever stayed on. True solitude and tranquility. Incredible. Saw deer, heard many owls. Relaxed more than I have done in ages. No humans - just nature. Yeah - there are no facilities. I've never done this before, but found it to be no problem whatsoever.

Local attractions

There’s much to be said for just wandering out onto local lanes for a rural roam or bike ride, but if you’d prefer a proper woodland trail, consider hitting Long Melford Country Park or the Suffolk Wildlife Trust nature reserve. And if you’re the kind who requires a suitable reward to get you moving, it’ll take you around 45 minutes to walk to Giffords Hall vineyard for a tour and taster.

Ickworth Housr and its surrounding estate, 20 minutes’ drive from the farm, is a fab place to spend a day out – there’s much to see as you wander around the gardens and the huge Italianate rotunda of the main house. Kentwell Hall and the lovely Spencers Garden are all within a 20-minute drive too.

For town-based trotting, Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds and Long Melford are good places to potter around, and Cambridge is around a 45-minute drive away. Arty types should head to Sudbury, 20 minutes away, to visit Gainsborough’s House and board boat trips through the landscapes that inspired Constable.
