Surrounding area

General

  • Pub site a few minutes' drive from Alton Towers
  • Homemade food with daily menu changes
  • Easy access to the Peak District

Ah, pub campsites... how lovely they be. Especially when they dish up home-cooked nosh from a menu as extensive as the Staffordshire Moorlands’ Cross Inn: bring on the steak. And the Sunday carvery. And several desserts.

The Cross Inn Caravan Park is also a hit with families as it’s only a few minutes’ drive to Alton Towers and many guests use it as a base for trips there; the Peak District is on the doorstep too and is crammed with activities and attractions for kids, many of which are free. Huzzah!

Take your foodie pick from the newly refurbished restaurant or the pub in front of the fire; the menu changes daily and there are regular special offers to be had on spirits, ale and lager, just the ticket if you need to save some pennies for Alton Towers... There’s a play area on site too and a coin laundry is available for guests’ use.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A charge of £0.50 per 4 minutes applies for the use of shower.

Rock pegs are recommended as the site is in a limestone area; this also means that some pitches are a little uneven.

Fantastic little site that's perfect to escape technology with the kids! Reasonably prices pitches, kept clean and tidy (although some others campers seems to have complete disrespect for this), owners were lovely and helpful, brilliant little park for the kids. Pub was brill, amazing food and well priced drinks. Can't comment on the Wi-Fi as we had no intention of using it. Will be returning in the near future with a friend

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but would recommend taking storm or rock pegs as some areas where hard ground

Everything. We paid £75 for 3 night. Packed up and went home after the first night. What a waste of money.
Will never book through pitchup again if this is the kind of places they have on their website

    The weather

    Disliked:

WiFi, toilets, beer in the bar, monitoring of the site, lack of sky sports. WIFI not available as stated, toilets not cleaned, especially the men's, went for a drink in the pub to be told quite a number of beers not available. Do not take any notice of the pictures posted on the website as it is more like a transport cafe than a country pub. Cannot comment on the food as we walked in and straight back out. We camped in the big field which was not monitored for noise and anti social behaviour at any point. We also found out on our arrival that they do not have sky sports any longer. Also to note I overheard a member of staff saying that she was sick of the place and hoped it would fall down.

From the manager...

Oh, this is the couple that rang me at 5.15pm to complain that music was being played on a nice hot Bank Holiday weekend when every one including children were having a good time, I did speak to you and you did see me monitoring the site, sorry that you did not like being on a friendly family site. Poorly maintained site with particularly bad facilities.08/28/2019

    Courteous staff.

    Disliked:

Poor and badly maintained toilet facilities. Male toilet is in a portacabin. Shower is coin operated (50p for 4 minutes) but also has an autoshutoff button which you still have to keep pushing to maintain the water flow. Ridiculous system which was very frustrating.
We chose this 'pub site' to be able to eat at the pub after a long journey. The pub food was unavailable despite arriving at the site in time when food should still have been available.
Pitches were poorly marked and uneven.

From the manager...

Sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. It is clearly stated the showers are 50p. Food in the pub times are clearly marked on the board at the side of the bar area. Steve

Local attractions

Once you’ve met your Nemesis at Alton Towers, plenty of other family-friendly fare is in the area, including a fair bit for unfair weather such as several indoor play areas and six leisure centres with pools (if you’re feeling hardy, there’s a heated outdoor pool at Hathesage too). Peak Wildlife Park two miles away at Winkhill has over 200 species of birds to see and is open all year round.

The Peak District National Park will keep you busy for weeks, with hundreds of miles of cycling trails including the flat Manifold Way, National Trust properties, gorges, waterfalls and archaeological sites – look out for Thor’s Cave if you’re pedalling the Manifold Way from Waterhouses.

Walkers and scenery seekers should make for the spectacular Dovedale Valley near Ashbourne, a limestone ravine cut into the landscape and with the famous stepping stones over the River Dove. Start from Milldale to walk down through Dovedale and use the stones, then explore Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale via their footpaths around the countryside or along the river.

Finally, if your little chatterers are still gibbering for more adventures even after Alton Towers, take them to award-winning Trentham Estate just outside Stoke-on-Trent: kids might not be too fussed on the shopping village or massive garden centre, but the Monkey Forest and Aerial Extreme there should come up trumps.

Must see

  • Alton Towers Resort (2.9 miles)
  • Sudbury Hall (10.9 miles)
  • Royal Doulton Factory Shop, Trentham (11.4 miles)

National Trust

  • The Old Manor (4.8 miles)
  • Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood (11.1 miles)
