General

  • Woodland camping with nature trails and wildlife
  • Directly opposite the stately home Kelham Hall
  • 44 acres of landscaped grounds

Now this is scenic camping… Kelham Hall and Country Park campsite near Newark in Nottinghamshire is within the country park of the former Victorian mansion of Kelham Hall: pile the family to this country estate for a look at how the other half lived.

Entrance is free to the (fab) hall itself and there are tearooms open daily serving breakfast, lunch, snacks, cakes drinks and Sunday lunch; an outdoor bar available most weekends during the summer months (subject to weather.)

But you might spend most of your time at Kelham roaming around the acres of landscaped grounds, woodland walks and pretty paths along the River Trent...There are nature trails for children, a playground, a riverside meadow to wander in, loads of space for ball games, and yet more places for private picnics or sitting and watching the wildlife.

Fishing and tennis are both available on site for an extra charge, as is a trailer tour (also fab) around the 44-acre estate's woodland, riverside meadow, sculpted gardens and secret monks' graveyard.

Kelham Hall and Country Park takes tents, tourers and motorhomes on its good-sized pitches, and has a shower and toilet block with refurbished shower cubicles. The campsite office sells drinks, ice cream and vending machine snacks; if you're not eating at the hall, a pub serving food is just outside the campsite gates.

Not much to do, no shop nearby if you need anything, the temporary showers were a bit worse for wear there were other showers located in the hall but this is quite far away from the camping pitches.

Interesting informal camping setting among trees; good play for kids 09/03/2018

relaxed site, no actual "pitches"- just pitch wherever you want which suited us camping as a bigger group. All v laid back. Lovely trees and woodland area for kids to explore, as well as tennis courts and play area. Really helpful lovely staff in the office. Interesting grand setting in the grounds!
Proper toilets and showers in the main house.

    Disliked:

Generally everyone on the site was lovely and considerate with their music, noise, fires, etc. People kept noise down after about 9, and most people went to be by 11 latest. However if there had been any problems there was no-one to report it to or police the site.
Toilets at bottom of field not great - end of the season and it looked like they've been used a LOT.
Not enough spaces for washing up. We only did one night so didn't bother us. but longer stays may get annoying!

The filthiest site we have ever visited. 09/16/2018

Nothing to like about this site.

    Disliked:

We were given a pitch by the warden, it was filthy with overflowing wheelie bins. We were approached by a woman running a dog show who told us to move because she wanted the pitch for her dog show members. The warden had to get involved. Toilet facilities are porta cabins which are disgusting, all toilets unusable in the morning because every one, male and female, was blocked. Filthy showers also in porta cabins. Unable to wash dishes in the wash up area as our dirty dishes were cleaner than the cupboard provided for wash up. No laundry facilities which is probably a blessing!

Over grown plants in doorways, could smell the toilets from our pitch and electric cables running through the site. We have no idea how the welfare authorities can keep this site open.

We asked in reception how to make an official complaint. Two ladies said they couldn’t help because it wasn’t their job. Waited longer in reception but nobody turned up. We left disgusted.

£32 a night is an absolute joke, the manager of this site should be embarrassed.

We have taken our grandchildren for a weekend to kelham for the past three years. What a great setting! Our grumbles for the first 2 were the lack of toilet and shower facilities and the noisy generators.
This year...what a lovely surprise met us! New shower blocks, proper electric hook ups making for a quiet weekend. We were close to the play areas which meant our grandkids aged from 3 TO 10 were able to gain independence whilst also being safe. We went on bat walks at night with torches, enjoyed bike rides.

    A lovely time🎃

    Disliked:

A little shop on site would have been useful and maybe a disco or a local band playing.

Lots to do on site - kids rode their bikes, plenty of space to play football. We had a great time playing laser tag.

The bins were emptied daily and the showers/toilets cleaned several times a day so despite it being busy and wet everything was as good as it good be.

    Disliked:

Not much really. The pub over the road (the fox I think) was very unwelcoming but a 5 minute drive took us into Newark for a good dinner out.

About a mile and a half further on, in the little village of Kelham. The site is on the left, well signposted.

Local attractions

If you're feeling swottily historical after mugging up on the history of Kelham Hall, piles more historic houses are around Newark, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, like Newark Castle, the country estate of Rufford Abbey and much-recommended The Workhouse at Southwell, the most complete Victorian workhouse still left in the country.

At Lincoln, about half an hour's drive from Newark, most visitors make for Lincoln Castle, Lincoln Cathedral and the Medieval Bishop's Palace – joint tickets are available for the castle and cathedral, or you can buy a ticket to see the castle and Magna Carta exhibition, or one to have a walk along the massive Norman walls.

Back at Newark, a nicely eclectic mix of regular shows and events are among the 500 annual events at Newark Showground, such as antiques and collectors' fairs, vintage vehicle days, concerts and the Nottinghamshire County Show.
