Searching for a site that’s just as secluded as it is scenic? Think Top of the Wolds Caravanning, Camping and Fishing in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an area covering 150 acres of ancient woodland, hedgerows and wildflower meadows. Views from this peaceful park stretch out over the Scamblesby and Belchford vales, making it ace for spending restful hours doing nothing much at all. Evenings are a feast for the eyes too: look up, as this is top stargazing territory due to low light pollution in the region. Off site, Top of the Wolds is under 10 minutes’ drive from the motor racing circuit at Cadwell Park, 10 minutes from Horncastle market town and 45 from the cathedral city of Lincoln. Going east, the Lincolnshire coast at Skegness, Sutton-on-Sea and Mablethorpe – for beach days aplenty – is within 40 minutes’ drive. Not that you’ll need to go far for aquatic activities: the site has coarse fishing lakes, where all ages and abilities are welcome to try their luck landing tench, roach, bream, brown trout and carp of up to 25lbs. Non-anglers or spectators can retreat to Willow Lodge, an enclosed glass lodge with room outdoors for a barbecue (and a gas barbecue is available to hire from the team).

Local attractions

Keen walkers will want to make their way to Snipe Dales Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive) to see classic Lincolnshire Wolds scenery. The reserve has one of the last remaining wet valley systems in the region and leads to the Country Park for wanders in woodland. If golf’s your preferred way to spend the day, book a round at Woodhall Spa; while you knock a few balls around on the green, the rest of your travel crew can set forth on the Viking Way trail from the nearby village (20 minutes). Got the kids with you? Take them to visit the furry creatures at Tattershall Farm Park (30 minutes) or have them find out all about the history of planes at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (25 minutes), set on a 1940s RAF Lancaster Bomber airfield. More transport-related amusement’s to be had on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway (40 minutes), and the town also has a boating lake for sailing sessions and a beach for spreading out on the sand.
