Quiet rural camping just 12 miles from central London

General

  • Large peaceful parkland 12 miles from central London
  • Café, farm shop, barbecue rental and free wifi
  • Lots of activities for kids including pony rides and animal feeding

City slickers! If you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, you'll find the setting of Elmstree's Aldenham Country Park magic.

This wild camping and peaceful park is less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another topping aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a tiptop option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.)

Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks, pony rides, egg collecting and animal feeding among the activities for guests.

Kids can join an expert-led survival workshop, learn about life on the farm or search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include fishing and cycle rides on woodland trails.

The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, free wifi, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 12/31.

Facilities/activities including access to the adventure playground and the farm are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 7 or more people are not permitted.

The scenery was lovely, there were plenty of toilets, staff were very helpful and friendly and reasonably priced.

    Disliked:

There were not designated camping spaces, it was just a pitch up wherever you like basis, there were not many places you could wash your hands, I was put off using the shower facilities as it looked like they were tiny sheds, washing up stations were not sheltered so if it rains you either can’t wash up or you get wet, there were not many level spaces, no ehu and the only bins were as you exit the site.

From the manager...

Hello,

Thank you for your comments, we are a wild camping site that has a pitchless rule this enables are campers to camp where ever they like and we have found many benefits for this.

Your comments on the shelter for the sinks has been noted, and we will look into this!

We hope we can welcome you back soon,

Overall I was pleased with our stay, the site was a litter free field in a lovely avenue of chestnut trees. We was 3 miles Stanmore Tube Station by using the park and ride facility at the station it took around 30 min to reach the centre of London.

    Disliked:

The staff are friendly and helpful but carried out the their duty's to the bare minimum, the toilets were never properly cleaned and hand sanitizers were not refilled. The shower went from cold to warm for no reason and was never hot and the shower holder was broken. There was no supervision of where people could set up their pitch and a few times when arrived back from day out we found a neighbour had pitched uncomfortably close to us.

From the manager...

Hello Graham,

Thank you for your comments we are glad you enjoyed your trip overall.

We will pick up with our staff in regards to their cleaning duties these should always be done to a top standard. In regards to our showers we had the issue reported and have no fixed this. Our site is a pitch free campsite.

We hope we can welcome you back soon,

The proximity to London. Being able to just walk in the immediate area. The young staff were friendly and helped as much as they could.

    Disliked:

The fact that we were not allowed to use the wooded area even though I had chosen the site because of this fact and explained that I had had a lot of skin cancer and needed shade. The ground either side of the gates was an actual quagmire and we were glad we had experience of driving on mud roads in Africa!! This was rectified in one area but the other area was awaiting hardcore to come after we left. Surely this was not the first time this problem had occurred?

From the manager...

Hello,

Thank you for comments, i'm sorry about our wooded area being closed this never escalated to me otherwise we would of been flexible considering your circumstances.

Our ground is based on top of clay and we do try our best to keep this in a good enough condition, as soon as our ground see's sun it dries up immediately so there is pro's and con's to this sadly.

We hope we can welcome you back again soon, and please feel free to contact me direct with any problems in future.

Thanks

Lovely spot, well organised and not overbearing at all. Facilities kept really clean and nice, staff super helpful, COVID rules do make logistics slightly more complicated but Aldenham crew do a good job of not letting it become too painful. Will definitely be back. If I had one small niggle. The £25 fire package doesn't provide very much wood for the price and the the check in area is not well sign posted, we had trouble figuring out where we had to do at first.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Hello,

Thank you for your comments, we are glad you enjoyed your stay with some lovely pictures!!

In regards to our fire package, this also includes permission to have your fire (covers the cost for us to re-seed,dig and resurface our fields). Hope this makes a little more sense when it comes to the fire package cost.

We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back another time.

Hello,

Thank you for your comments, in regards to our toilets facilities we are an eco-friendly campsite. Therefore our toilets are compost toilets, we do understand not everyone likes this idea so we do have the trailer toilets available as well.
