Spacious peaceful campsite, run by extremely friendly and helpful owners who have obviously put a great deal of thought into what makes a perfect camping spot. The area speaks for itself, the views are stunning, and there’s plenty of local information on the sites boards regarding where to go, where to eat and drink etc. There is also a very sound ethos of minimum environmental impact, with extremely effective compost toilets and lovely hot showers (solar I think). The site was very quiet when I visited, but it’s obvious that everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the space and tranquility. I’d definitely like to come back.

The Beech Hut exceeded our expectations. It was lovely - tucked under the trees (meaning that it didn't get too hot) and very private. We also had the option of having part of the main field for seating and BBQ/firepit, so had the best of both worlds. We were able to park next to these bits, right by the gate to our garden, meaning that our vehicle was next to our accommodation.

The accommodation and facilities definitely exceeded expectations. We had a completely fenced in private garden for our dog (that she loved!), the kitchen was well equipped (we expected just a basic ring, but had a double ring hob, microwave, mini fridge, and kettle), as well as hot and cold water to the outside sink and our own compost loo. It was a really nice touch to have lights we could switch on to use the loo and sink after dark, rather than having to mess about with a torch.

The mezzanine bedroom was comfy and effort had definitely been made throughout to make the most of space and to give the place a cheerful feel. We had rubbish bins in the Beech Hut, but chose to take our rubbish to the main campsite rubbish point so that we could recycle most of it.

WiFi was really good - we were able to stream shows with ease.

The staff (Josie in particular) made us very welcome, whilst also giving us privacy. We felt that she got the balance just right.

It was really good to see that unused areas of the site had been left for wildflowers. The sheer abundance and variety of insects and birds shows how well this site is working with nature, rather than against it.

    Disliked:

    Nothing really.
For anyone concerned, the 11kg dog limit is not a BSL thing, it's a safety thing due to the height of fences on site. It makes sense when you see it.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay. We are rather confused though by your 11kg dog limit sentence which makes no sense and what is BSL other than British Sign Language?

The fences have been fine for a massive variety of small to large dogs, we've never had an issue with any dog and the fences here so we just don't understand what you're trying to say?

    Really clean and well kept.
Spacious (2 adults, 2 children (both 11y) and a small dog).
    Private toilet.
    Parking available right outside accommodation.
Sink including hot and cold water.
Electric including lots of plug sockets.
Large field available for use, great for kicking a ball around.
    Enclosed garden for dog.
Washing up products provided (washing bowl, liquid, sponge, cloth and tea towel).
Friendly and helpful owners on-site and available, good comms.
Great price for 4 nights over Easter holidays.
Good base for exploring west Devon.
Short drive to nice pubs (definitely recommend The Bell Inn in Chittlehampton).
Comfy double bed in the mezzanine which the children shared. We used the sofa bed which was large and easily a double and surprisingly comfy.
WiFi was available. I didn’t use it but the children did and no complaints.
Nice hot showers a short walk away.
    Super cosy!

    Disliked:

Wasn’t as secluded as I would have hoped (backs on to owners garden - a higher fence or some shrubs would be good), however weather as awful so we weren’t able to make much use of the outside space.
Not much in way of a view.
Garden wasn’t dog friendly - daffodils and ivy aplenty, looks nice but just be on watch/careful if you take your dog.
A surface spray for inside the hut would be handy.

From the manager...

So pleased that you had a good stay. Your points about daffodils and ivy are well made , it's never come up before, I guess because you had a puppy you had to watch carefully. We have never had an issue in 8 years and have had hundreds of dogs stay at The Beech Hut but it's given us food for thought so thanks for pointing it out.

Whilst our garden is on one side we don't actually use that end of the 3 acre garden at all so it's a rare thing to see anyone and obviously the fields are on the other side with your own fire pit and bbq area there. Most people love watching the sunsets from there.

Thanks for your review.
