- Vegan- and vegetarian-friendly site on the scenic Garden Route
- Live alongside nature: baboons, monkeys and bird song around the site
- A 20-minute drive from beaches, watersports and sandboarding
There may be a snake or two at Peace of Eden, but none of them will be tempting you into wickedness – the site, 15 minutes from the town of Knysna in South Africa’s Western Cape, is eco-, vegan- and vegetarian-friendly, so no animals will be hurt in the making of your getaway.
Peace of Eden is on the edge of Knysna Forest on the scenic Garden Route (which stretches from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east), and a handy on-site cycle hire facility means you can ride through the scenic countryside.
Living alongside nature is heavily emphasised here and, when you’re relaxing on site, you’ll be sharing your space with monkeys, baboons and plenty of avian friends. Venture along the trails through the forest to get closer to that wildlife, or take your animal-friendly vibes on a trip to nearby Knysna Elephant Park fo a walk among its residents.
Back on site, relax among the greenery or look for hidden garden corners before heading for a quick bite and drink at the Forest Café. When you’re ready for something more substantial, order up a freshly-prepared vegan meal in the on-site restaurant.
If you’d prefer to go self-catering, that’s not a problem – barbecues are allowed on site (as long as you’re not bringing any meat to cook on them), or you could try out one or two of the restaurants within half an hour of Peace of Eden.

Local attractions
There’s tons to do near Peace of Eden if you’re of an active disposition, starting with kayaking on the Knysna river, 10 minutes’ drive away, or heading towards Buffels Bay for some sandboarding.
There’s nothing wrong with seeking out a sedate experience of course, so for a relaxing day you can spend time in Wilderness National Park or the Goukamma Nature Reserve, or strolling along Jubilee Creek walk (which starts at a spiffing picnic site).
If you’ve already forgotten your time at Knysna Elephant Park (an elephant wouldn’t forget, but you’re only human), refresh your memory by meeting the gentle giants at the Elephant Sanctuary in the Crags (an hour’s drive) or with a longer trip to Addo Elephant National Park (three and a half hours).
Those who are lucky enough to be continuing their journey – or even have time to spare for an overnight stay – have to add Cape Town to the itinerary (worth the drive at five-and-a-half hours). Hike Table Mountain, explore the Cape of Good Hope, take the boat out to Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned), head to the Instagram-ready (and colourful, and importantly historic) neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap, and visit the many museums.
