- Rural bush site off the R36 15 minutes from Ohrigstad
- Handy stopover for travellers on the Panorama Route
- Artist-owned site with sculptures and other works on display
Folks who’ve ever struggled with directions to find their designated digs will be thankful for this one being supremely simple to spot. All you need do as you drive along the R36 is look out for a two-storey shoe. Yup, a shoe.
That huge brick-built boot guides you into Op-i-Plaas Bush Camp, a rural spot 15 minutes’ drive from Ohrigstad. Owner Ron, as you may have guessed, is a bit of an artist, and displays his works at the site’s shop for guests and visitors to buy if they feel so inspired (not the shoe itself though – that’d be a tad impractical to pack).
And there’s plenty of natural beauty to admire around here too – birds flit about in the trees and there are sparkling starry skies to stare at come nightfall. Folks following the Panorama Route may well find the camp a handy stopover, but there’s much to keep you busy if you choose to settle for a little longer: Echo Caves are 10 minutes’ drive up the road, and there are heaps of activities in the surrounding foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains (hiking, horse riding, rafting, ziplining… take your pick).
On site, there’s an outdoor pool for reviving dips, and a café that serves up breakfasts and lunches along with coffees or beers to sip. Dinner means braai, of course, and pitches here have been kitted out with their own grills, along with water, electrical supplies and washing lines. Shared facilities nearby include pleasingly sizeable family bathrooms with lots of hot water.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/01 and 31/12 (subject to weather conditions).
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

You can also try filtering your search by group type and by parks allowing multiple tents/caravans/motorhomes per site.

The site is on the main road, R36 between Lydenburg to Ohrigstad and on to Tzaneen.
Make sure to come along here with a fully charged camera – stunning scenic snaps are at every turn along the aptly named Panorama Route, which passes by the site. Particular spots to seek out include Echo Caves (10 minutes’ drive), the Three Rondavels waterfall (25 minutes), Bourke's Luck Potholes (half an hour) and God’s Window (50 minutes).
Surrounds tempting you out to get active? Saddle up for a mountain bike ride on the trails of Crystal Springs Nature Reserve (40 minutes), take a hike on the 18-kilometre Hippo Trail (50 minutes) or slide down the mountainside on the Long Tom Toboggan (an hour and 15 minutes). Rafting, fly fishing and canyoning are all within a drive of an hour or so, and the adrenaline-packed ziplines and gorge swings of The Big Swing are just under an hour away.
Still a little baffled by all the options? The friendly folks on site will provide you with a booklet of ideas, detailing lots of the area’s best activities and places to visit.
