General

  • Award-winning seafront site a few kilometres from the Italian border
  • Next to a beach with watersports centre
  • Wellness centre, two pools, restaurants, bars and summer riding school

This is a site you should pretty much insist on. Slovenia's Adria Ankaran Camping has so much going for it you might have to be dragged away kicking and sulking when it's time to leave: it's in a seaside town, is an award winner, is next to a beach (with watersports for active types), and is three kilometres from the Italian border for you to cross countries and boast that you've 'done' Italy too.

And there's oh so much more. The site's setting in the small seaside town of Ankaran on the Gulf of Trieste is also five kilometres from the scenic resort of Koper, and is in a wooded area with the Parenzana cycle route a few minutes away (yes, of course you can hire bikes on site). A riding school runs on weekends in July and August.

Watersports including kayaking, paddleboarding and pedalo boating are available at the private beach. On site, you can splash around at the indoor and outdoor pools, as well as have serene Slovenian days at the wellness centre with Jacuzzi while the kids are occupied at the summer kids' club (mornings) or discos (evenings).

And there's yet more… Such as several playgrounds, tennis courts, a volleyball court, a football pitch, miniature golf, a gym, and a busy programme of adult fitness classes including aqua gym, zumba and pilates. Food? Well sorted too, natch, at the four restaurants, café, several bars and a mini market.

A great site at a great price.06/29/2019

  • Liked:

Mature pines giving much needed shade
Seafront area with pool (salty), pebbly beach area with direct access to the sea
    Variety of pitch options
Right next to low key complex containing shops banks restaurants etc.
    Large but quiet
    Helpful and friendly staff
    Good toilet and shower facilities
Good location, easy to reach from the motorway
Well placed for exploring the rest of the Slovenian coastline and for onward travel

    Disliked:

Not a dislike, but we were initially alarmed to see oil refinery and dock yards on the coastline as we travelled towards the camp. These fears were in fact proven irrelevant and we forgot they were anywhere in the vicinity as they did not affect the site or its shoreline in any way.

    Facilities

    Disliked:

The pitches were a bit dingy and close together. If staying on the left hand side of the campsite (when looking towards the sea) there is a huge shipping yard which is quite noisey. The right side looked nice. Also tried to charge an extra €20 for booking when there was no mention of it when booking but they did knock it off. Had to pay extra to use the indoor pool (not sure if you did with the outdoor one). Pit he's not level. They also lock in your electric cable which means check out takes longer as you have to wait for them to come and unlock it. Lots of pitches are under pine trees so the needles and mud get everywhere.

Local attractions

This excellently-placed site is close to cycling routes and nature reserves, Italian towns and Slovenian villages, coastal hikes and long beach days. Horse riding, watersports and forest hikes can be arranged right from the site.

Hire a bike from the Adria Ankaran Camping team to pedal the kilometre to the Parenzana cycle route, for as long a ride as you can muster along its 80-kilometre length of old railway that once connected Trieste to Buje and Poreč.

You could also mosey across the border to Italy's Muggia six kilometres away, the only port town on the Istrian peninsula. There's a strong Venetian influence here around its handsome harbour and old villas, ruined city walls and 14th-century castle: drink it all in from a seafood restaurant on the waterfront or with a jug of wine in the square behind the port.

From Muggia, take a ferry to the port city of Trieste, 15 kilometres from Ankaran, to see such famed sights as its scenic seafront, main square the Piazza Unità d'Italia, Miramare Castle and gardens, and the Victory Lighthouse. Trieste has been claimed as the most underrated tourist destination in the world, so get there quick before it's swallowed by the throngs.
