- Swish saloon wagon in garden grounds backing a nature reserve
- A 35-minute drive from Amsterdam, in south Holland’s lake district
- Rainshower, flatscreen TV with Netflix, bikes and a snack/drinks menu
Sort a swanky stay in The Dutch Farmhouse’s cute and compact saloon wagon at the bottom of a well cared for and spacious garden in south Holland’s lake district.
Fancy amenities like an ensuite with a rainshower plus a 55-inch flatscreen TV (including Netflix) are in this modern unit, but you might want to switch off the latter and watch the animals roam around the garden instead: owners Marlous and Lucas look after a friendly group of pigs, goats and sheep. Just past the terrace on the grounds are a meadow and nature reserve too, making The Dutch Farmhouse feel like it’s far enough away from it all while being just a 35-minute drive to the centre of Amsterdam.
Venture into the city to visit famed sights like the Anne Frank and Van Gogh museums or stick to the nearby country surrounds, renting boats and kayaks on lakes like Noordeinderplas less than five minutes’ drive away, wild swimming in a river even closer to the site, and putting your walking boots to good use with a bit of light trekking.
Thanks to the self-catering kitchen in the unit, you could pack a picnic to take with you on your travels (or ask Marlous and Lucas for the drink and snack menu). The fridge is stocked with cold beers, sodas and wines for quenching the thirst – bag one to sip while having a well-deserved rest on the queensize bed at the end of a day out.

Local attractions
As well as being near Amsterdam for canal walks beside the narrow 17th-century Golden Age houses, other Dutch cities of note like Utrecht (35 minutes) and The Hague (50 minutes) are also within driving distance.
Utrecht is an urban centre worth visiting for its medieval Old Town, canals and churches. Climb up to the Domtoren, a 14th-century bell tower, for city views and stick your head around the door of the Gothic Cathedral of St Martin in the middle of Domplein square too. Yet more religious sights are in the former Museum Catharijneconvent monastery with its Christian art and artefacts.
While still full of attractive architecture, The Hague feels a bit more modern as it's the forward-thinking home of the UN’s International Court of Justice; visit the city for the Gothic-style Dutch parliament and 16th-century Noordeinde Palace as well.
Wander over to the old Westveene Molen windmill 10 minutes on foot from the site (and climb to the top if it's open, usually on Saturdays) or ride the site's free bikes – including a tandem – if you’ve hopes of making like a Dutch native and cycling the local trails.
