General

  • Scenic forest site near the old cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen
  • Surrounded by De Hoge Veluwe National Park
  • Pool, sauna, steam bath, solarium, beauty centre and pony riding

What a beaut: Recreatiepark De Boshoek at Voorthuizen in Gelderland is in a highly scenic setting for long lazy hols, right in the greenly handsome De Hoge Veluwe Forest, near the historic cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen, and within easy reach of the many castles and manor houses of the Achterhoek area.

But you'll have to get off site first. This is a big holiday park with stacks of facilities to keep all ages amused, from activities for teenagers to GPS walks and an entertainment programme running at least twice a week in high season. There's a wellness centre too, with sauna, steam bath, solarium and beauty centre, and heaps more active facilities including table tennis, a sports field, a tennis court, pétanque courts, pool and billiards, riding sessions, pony riding, miniature golf and archery classes.

And there's also water... Recreatiepark De Boshoek has a heated outdoor pool open from May to September, a heated indoor pool and a heated toddlers' pool as well as a sunbathing area to laze around while getting stuck into a fat tome.

The up to date and well thought out amenities include showers with hot water, individual wash cabins with toilet paper provided, a chemical disposal point, kids' facilities, a parent and baby room and a room for disabled guests. Washing up sinks, washing machines, dryers and ironing facilities are also on site.

And finally, mightn't you fancy cooking/driving on a long lazy hol such as this? The park has a snack bar and restaurant with a full menu as well as a fully-stocked supermarket.

Big site with lots to do. Great children washroom and toilet. Although it was mainly Dutch the kids club really involved our kids.

    Disliked:

Quite a few older kids so it was a bit noisy occasionally

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, museums, golf and the highest density of amusement parks in Europe… all are in the area around Recreatiepark De Boshoek in Holland's biggest province of Gelderland.

Biking first: the site is in the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in Holland at 5,400 hectares and with 40 kilometres of cycle paths to explore. Pedalling through these landscapes is a bit of a must if you're staying in these parts, as the park lays on 1,800 white bikes for free use including bikes for kids and bikes with front or rear children's seats.

After cycling (do get along all 40 kilometres if you can manage it), have a culture vulture afternoon out at the Kröller-Müller Museum, an art museum started by Helene Kröller-Müller who began to collect the works of Vincent van Gogh in the 1930s. It has the second biggest collection of paintings by Van Gogh in the world (the biggest is of course at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam) and is also famed for its sculpture garden, one of the biggest in Europe at over 30 hectares.

Closer to home, a fine 18-hole golf course is an easy bike ride away.
