General

  • Rural desert site on the banks of the Tsauchab river
  • Namib-Naukluft National Park and Sesriem Canyon within 45-min drive
  • Rockpools, hiking trail, hot showers and braai areas on site

How do you fancy a stay in a little desert oasis, taking a dip in a natural rockpool before getting the grill going for your evening braai...? If that sounds like the stuff of dreams, set up home at Hauchabfontein Camping, a rural site on the Tsauchab river in Namibia’s central region half an hour’s drive from Sesriem.

There’s desert all around, but Hauchabfontein is a lush little corner, with clear rockpools and a backdrop of one of the biggest quiver tree forests in the country. Those pools stretch for six kilometres and are fab for a cooling swim on a hot desert day, perhaps after a long walk on the seven-kilometre Secret Valley hiking trail.

Birdwatching, farm drives and game watching are popular activities on site; if you’re looking to explore a bit further around this part of Namibia, the site's within 45 minutes' drive of Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Sesriem Canyon, and just over an hour from the colourful dunes of Sossusvlei.

Back at base, secluded and private pitches look out over the river and are surrounded by native acacia and ebony trees to ensure plenty of shade to chill out in. Each one has a drinking water tap and a properly solid braai area; supplies of firewood and fresh meat can be picked up on site. Clean bathrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets are a short stroll away from the pitches.

Quiet location, close to a road but almost no traffic. Pitch has some shade and good privacy. Proper shower. Friendly owner.

Card terminal was out of order so had to pay in cash. Electricity point would have been nice, but this we knew in advance.

Beautiful, neat, absolutely WONDERFUL campsite. We loved the idea of no electricity at the campsites and the candlelit pathway to the ablution (which is only lit for an hour or so! It brings you close to nature.

Edith, your service was immaculate, thank you!

We will definitely return to Hauchabfontein again.

This was such a beautiful Place. Kiewiet and Ediths campsite gives you a feeling of pure nature. Kiewiet did a great job and was a perfect host. We felt welcome from the beginning.
Luckily all the campsites closer to Sossusvlei were full and we found this little gem. Absolutely satisfied with everything. It’s definitely worth to stay at least two nights.

We spent 2 nights here whilst visiting Sossusvlei. In truth we tried to get into camps inside the park or closer to Sesriem but we were so pleased that they were full! They were full of too many people and overland tours.
It was so tranquil with natural beauty as your vista everywhere. We swam in the pools and walked around the site which covers a huge area for only six site areas. Facilities are perfect and small touches like the path lanterns are lovely. No electric hook up though but didn’t pose a problem.
It was around 60 kms to Sesriem but we left for the Big Daddy around 5.30 and in honesty didn’t feel we needed to be first at the gate for sunrise. Came back in the afternoon and cooled off in the pools. Sat outside star gazing before quit nights sleep!
Our best Namibian camp experience so far.

This was an absolutely wonderful campsite, done with so much attention to detail. Lovely and big campsites which offer a lot of privacy. The toilet/shower blocks are really lovely and feel more like your bathroom at home rather than a campsite. Fires for hot showers are lit in the evening (so no hot water in the mornings) and the showers worked beautifully. They even light candles along the pathways when it gets dark, what a nice touch.

Local attractions

Folk flock to this part of Namibia to see all its natural attractions, so it’s worth planning at least a few days to take them all in. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the main draws: the largest game park in all Africa is about 40 minutes’ drive from Hauchabfontein and a fab place to spot birds, unusual insects and other animals including jackals and hyenas.

The park’s scope also takes in the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park (an hour’s drive), where you may spot the shy creatures in the wild, and the famed dunes of Sossusvlei (an hour and 15 minutes). Don’t forget your camera when you set off for the dunes – the colours and shifting shapes are simply stunning. Stop by at Sesriem Canyon (45 minutes) on the way to wander through the kilometre-long rocky gorge.

If you’ve ever imagined yourself trotting through the desert on horseback, get your cowboy hat on and head to the riding centre 20 minutes from site. And if you actually just need a minute to relax and take it all in, stop off at Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate (25 minutes) for a taster of their wares (yup, that’s wine made in the desert – you can’t pass up that opportunity...).
