General
- Rural desert site on the banks of the Tsauchab river
- Namib-Naukluft National Park and Sesriem Canyon within 45-min drive
- Rockpools, hiking trail, hot showers and braai areas on site
How do you fancy a stay in a little desert oasis, taking a dip in a natural rockpool before getting the grill going for your evening braai...? If that sounds like the stuff of dreams, set up home at Hauchabfontein Camping, a rural site on the Tsauchab river in Namibia’s central region half an hour’s drive from Sesriem.
There’s desert all around, but Hauchabfontein is a lush little corner, with clear rockpools and a backdrop of one of the biggest quiver tree forests in the country. Those pools stretch for six kilometres and are fab for a cooling swim on a hot desert day, perhaps after a long walk on the seven-kilometre Secret Valley hiking trail.
Birdwatching, farm drives and game watching are popular activities on site; if you’re looking to explore a bit further around this part of Namibia, the site's within 45 minutes' drive of Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Sesriem Canyon, and just over an hour from the colourful dunes of Sossusvlei.
Back at base, secluded and private pitches look out over the river and are surrounded by native acacia and ebony trees to ensure plenty of shade to chill out in. Each one has a drinking water tap and a properly solid braai area; supplies of firewood and fresh meat can be picked up on site. Clean bathrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets are a short stroll away from the pitches.

Local attractions
Folk flock to this part of Namibia to see all its natural attractions, so it’s worth planning at least a few days to take them all in. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the main draws: the largest game park in all Africa is about 40 minutes’ drive from Hauchabfontein and a fab place to spot birds, unusual insects and other animals including jackals and hyenas.
The park’s scope also takes in the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park (an hour’s drive), where you may spot the shy creatures in the wild, and the famed dunes of Sossusvlei (an hour and 15 minutes). Don’t forget your camera when you set off for the dunes – the colours and shifting shapes are simply stunning. Stop by at Sesriem Canyon (45 minutes) on the way to wander through the kilometre-long rocky gorge.
If you’ve ever imagined yourself trotting through the desert on horseback, get your cowboy hat on and head to the riding centre 20 minutes from site. And if you actually just need a minute to relax and take it all in, stop off at Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate (25 minutes) for a taster of their wares (yup, that’s wine made in the desert – you can’t pass up that opportunity...).
