It's free, quick and easy!
- Simple family-run site right by the Ligurian Sea
- Five minutes' walk from the town centre of Sestri Levante
- A 45-minute drive to Genoa, Portofino and Cinque Terre
This simple, clean site with showers needs no adornments: it's right by the Ligurian Sea.
A tunnel runs straight from Sant'Anna Camping al Mare to the beach in the blink of an eye, and it's an easy five-minute stroll from here to Sestri Levante, an little pastel-hued town predating the Romans. Locals say it's two places, defined by the bays either side: Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence) to the south has an old harbour and quiet beaches, and its opposite number Baia del Favola (Bay of Fables) has a busy seafront and promenade. Both are named in honour of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who adored Sestri Levante and is adored right back with an annual festival in his honour every summer.
The Cinque Terre villages are an obvious pull for visitors to these parts – so much so that some holidaying Italians stay put in Sestri Levante rather than venturing further. The Rizzi art gallery feeds the soul with paintings dating back to the 1400s, and a cluster of seafood restaurants feed the other parts. A favourite pastime on hot summer days is to wander the shady streets of the old town window shopping, ice cream in hand.

Local attractions
At nearby Monte Castello (10 minutes' drive), trails wind through pinewoods and Mediterranean scrub past ruins from the Dark Ages to World War II to finish at Punta Manara, taking in views stretching from sea to sky to infinity.
If Sestri is a two-for-one-town then it's fairly obvious what the Cinque Terre is about… this famed circuit of five fishing villages (40 minutes) was not long ago only linked by mules. Footpaths are still the favoured way to visit; expect a heady mix of colours and scents, ruins and still-thriving communities.
Portofino was the hangout of the jetset even before jets, and it's still a great spot for oligarch-watching with its chic harbour and designer shop enclave. Those preferring geckos to Gucci will love the trails in the surrounding regional park; remains of Saint George (apparently) lie in the church above the town and below you can snorkel the inviting waters.
Divers both veteran and virgin head to Portovenere (an hour and 15 minutes) to explore the marine ecosystem and to see a massive underwater Christ statue. You can catch ferries to the islets of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto here, to find caves, ravines and a peaceful vibe.
