Stay in Italy by the sea at Villaggio Residence Punta Spin, a holiday village near Grado that's right by a long stretch of golden, sandy – and private – beach. The resort is just off the north-eastern Italian coast, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region between Venice and Trieste; six kilometres from Grado, connected to it by a bus line and a pretty cycle path (or by car in about 10 minutes), and an easy 15-minute drive to the ancient Roman city of Aquileia. Trieste is about 50 minutes away via a looping drive around the peninsula. There's loads to do at this spectacular-looking park: as well as the handsome beach and all its associated basking, swimming and watersports, you can spend time in and around one of the two pools for grownups (kids have their own, with slide), or energise yourself somewhat with sporty options aplenty. Basketball, football, beach volleyball and two tennis courts await the active, alongside a gym, bike rental, and, more gently, a miniature golf course. And after all that? Trot off to the little wellness centre to dip into the sauna or Turkish bath. A restaurant, pizzeria, supermarket and a bar with an ice cream parlour are also on site. Back at the sands, Punta Spin's private beach is free for guests to use; a separate area has parasols and sun loungers for hire.

Disliked: Niesmaczne jedzenie w restauracji. Wi-Fi praktycznie nie działa na parcelach przy plaży. Sanitariaty znajdują się jedynie w środkowej części kampingu i z parceli przy plaży jest dość daleko.

Liked: Travelled with an 8- and a 5-year-old and stayed in a tent pitch near the sea. The facilities were immaculately clean, with someone permanently cleaning the bathroom areas. The restaurant was mostly very good with great house wine. The kids loved the little arcade area and the dancing every night was a highlight for them. The pools were good, the slide in the baby pool was a little too young for ours, so they did not have a slide, which would have been nice for them. But there were enough deck chairs and it wasn't too crowded. The beach was great, with plenty of space to build sandcastles and the beach bar was a nice respite for the parents, where we could watch the kids. The water is super, super shallow, which was great for the smaller kid who was still a little anxious about deep water, but it really never got deeper, so older kids would get bored. The supermarket was well stocked, albeit expensive. But better than any camp supermarket we've come across before. The wine dispenser was brilliant! Also being able to rent the power cables for free (with a deposit) was a bonus.

Disliked: The walk to the bathrooms was really far from the beach, where we had our tent pitch. There should be additional toilets at least at the far end, as it was super far for a little kid to walk when desperate. A couple of times the showers were also all occupied, so there is obviously a need for more facilities. Another restaurant/ food place that offered a slight variety of food would have been good. The restaurant prices were a little steep for a campsite, especially as there was nowhere else to eat on-site. Patchy wifi at the far end, if you need it.

Local attractions

Grado, 10 minutes' drive away, is an excellent starting point for exploring the region: it's a medieval market town with old centre and old piles to wander around, and a waterpark too if all the historical submersion doesn't enthral the kids. Venturing out further, arrange a boat trip from Grado to the Marano-Grado Lagoon and its islands, a prime spot for birdwatching as well as digging into more local history and culture around the old fishermen's houses. The lagoon is also home to the island of Barbana, most famed for its Marian sanctuary that's still active today; visitors are welcome. The ancient Roman ruins, excavations and cathedral of Aquileia are within 15 minutes' drive; for a more shore-based settlement, make for 14th-century Duino Castle overlooking the Gulf of Trieste (30 minutes), where there's a museum and park. The 19th-century Miramare Castle in the Gulf of Trieste is 45 minutes from the site. Trains to Venice (an hour and 35 minutes' ride) depart from Cervignano, 25 minutes away.
