Beach day? Pool day? Kids’ club day? Sì, such are the tricky decisions to make at Villaggio Camping Costa d’Argento, on the Trabocchi coast between Ortona and Fossacesia.

Settle in for a stay at this San Vito Chietino site and you’ll be under 10 minutes’ walk from the resort’s sandy beach (accessed via a footpath with a subway under the main road for the safe passage of scampering small folk). Too far to trot? Make for the site’s outdoor pool area, complete with sun terrace for those who like to lounge and a paddling pool for the bambini to splash merrily around in.

In summer, mascot Ciao and a team of human helpers keep the tiddlers happily occupied with all manner of activities, allowing supervising parents a little free time of their own for swims, games of tennis or seeking out a shaded spot under a palm tree for a little siesta. A shared lounge and games room are also on site for relaxed indoor times.

Barbecues are permitted on site for those who fancy creating their own feasts, with a well-stocked mini market on hand to supply all the necessaries. If you’d rather bow to local foodie wisdom, there’s also a restaurant serving up traditional Italian specialities including woodfired pizzas, alongside top-notch wines and cool cocktails (best sipped out on the open-air terrace on a warm evening).

Pitches full of ratty old caravans and very narrow even for us in a be camper. We pitched up on one of 3 available pitches all facing the outside edge but chose the middle one to give us a bit more space to set up only to then have the staff roll around a rusty falling to pieces caravan and dump it right next to where we were sitting out so that was our view! Short walk to beach down a scruffy road and through car park. No sleep until after midnight as the animation and show is so loud and the site is actually really small. Showers are payable and either freezing or burning.

Liked:	The Facilities were very good. Swimming Pool, Shop, Showers. Mini Bar, Restaurant and games room all of a high standard. Friendly and helpful staff.
Disliked:	Lots of old caravans dotted around, at times looked like a scrap yard. The washing up facilities had blocked sinks. The rubbish areas were full for the days at the site. needed to be emptied more frequently.

Bungalow d'un autre âge, pas entretenue. Porte de salle de bain qui ne se ferme pas. Porte d'entrée qui se ferme très mal, il faut presque se décrocher l'épaule pour l'ouvrir et la fermé. Réfrigérateur pas aux normes, fil électrique qui pend à l'intérieur au niveau du thermostat. Douche glacé ou brulante. Lit pas confortable, on ressent les ressorts du sommier. Globalement manque de propreté. Nous n'y retourneront plus, à déconseiller.

Local attractions

As well as the lovely beach in San Vito Chietino (with both free and fee-paying areas) there are plenty of other fab sandy spots along this stretch of coastline. As you travel along the coast, keep your eyes peeled for the trabocchi (traditional fishing huts on stilts) that give the area its name.

A 15-minute drive (or train ride from the station 10 minutes’ walk from the site) is the town of Ortona, where you can wander around the castle, sip free wine (yes, really) from the wine fountain (yes, really), and take boat trips to the Tremiti Islands for gorgeous walks along the cliffs and through the olive groves, as well as some great scuba diving.

Also recommended as day trips are Abruzzo Zoo, 15 minutes’ drive away, to get up close to all sorts of beasts as you walk on the wildlife path, and the city of Pescara, half an hour away, for museums, churches and strolls along the seafront or through the historic centre.
