  • Spectacular lakeside site on the shores of Lac d'Aiguebelette
  • Among the French Alps, 20 minutes' drive from Chambéry
  • Restaurant, bar and direct access to a lakeside beach
The deep and famed emerald waters of Lac d'Aiguebelette, one of the biggest natural lakes in France, are yours to gaze upon from the bar at Camping Lac d'Aiguebelette. And then, once your energy levels and nerve are worked up, there's paragliding to be had over the lake's waters, hiking the Jura mountains in the surrounds, setting off on a nature-spotting trip around this lush Alpine landscape, or taking a craft out onto the lake's surface – these calm waters have hosted the world rowing championships a time or two. Or just plunge in for a dip, as Aiguebelette is one of the warmest lakes in the country, and has lifeguarded beaches from which you can launch yourself into the water. On the shore of all this is Camping Lac d'Aiguebelette, a spacious and family-friendly site a few minutes' drive from the Savoie department town of Saint-Alban-de-Montbel. There's stunning scenery around this four-hectare woodland setting, along with direct access to a lakeside beach and loads of space to spread out for a picnic. Pedalo boating, paddleboarding, rowing, kayaking and fishing are all available on the lake; on site, you and the kids will have table tennis, volleyball and table football to keep you occupied, as well as a playground with swings and slides, and a summer kids' club for ages five to 12. That aforementioned bar comes with lake views and a terrace; there's also a restaurant, and you can hire barbecues and fridges.

Local attractions

This lake and Alpine setting has enough to do to keep you busy for weeks, in and out of the water and in the surrounding mountains. Take off paragliding from the l'Epine mountain range or Marais, hike or cycle around the lake on a marked 18-kilometre nature trail, or amble – enviously – around the lakeside villas and the lake's boathouses on stilts, the only place in the French Alps you can see them. Around 150 kilometres of marked paths for mountain biking are around the lake too, including one that goes right around its perimeter. Within day trip distance there's Chambéry, about 20 minutes away, Lake Anneccy, within an hour, and viewing platforms all around including at Signal du Mont du Chat, the steep cycling challenge about 40 minutes from base.
