  • Peaceful Provence site in a pine forest near sandy beaches
  • The closest site to the Old Port of Marseille
  • Night walks, nature trips and donkey walks all available for guests
Base camp in Provence calling… And base camp for utterly magnif Marseille, less than half an hour away from this pine forest site: France's second biggest city and the largest on the Mediterranean coast is a place to roam for weeks for its famed and spectacular Old Port, splendid beaches and attractions for all tastes including art galleries, theatres and a couple of dozen museums. There should be no probs getting to all this cultured and sandy lot from Camping du Garlaban, as it's the closest Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur site to Marseille's port. Hail a ride from the bus stop to take you into the city, via a scenic route passing through Aubagne (stop off here at some point; it's also truly fab), and then on from Marseille to the seaside town of Cassis and the coastal and marine landscapes of the Calanques National Park. The Camping du Garlaban mission is to cater for peaceful stays in a preserved countryside environment, for guests to come back relaxedly back to after an energetic day around Marseille, Aubagne, the national park or the nearby beaches: both La Ciotat and Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer are within 25 to 30 minutes' drive. There's no hectic entertainment schedule here, just a quiet vibe, a few recreational sessions a week in July and August, and placid excursions such as night walks under the stars, nature-spotting trips, or walks with donkeys into the Provence countryside. An outdoor pool, games area and table tennis are around if you're up for getting (gently) active, and a riding centre for hacks and lessons is 800 metres from the site. Food markets are on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings a couple of kilometres away in Aubagne, and the site also has its own bar/snack bar for convenient eats and drinks.

Freecamp unpowered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Fantastic site set in the hills above Aubagne. Very quiet and beautiful settings for tent pitches. Good bus service into town, although the last bus is quite early. The facilities on site were excellent and we're always clean. All the staff were friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English.

Disliked: The bar shuts a little early. 10pm would be a better time. It would also be good if there was a toilet at the bar. The tent pitches are stoney so take strong tent pegs and a big mallet!

Powered forest floor caravan site

Liked: Lovely friendly and helpful staff. Well maintained and very clean pool area. Large shaded tent pitch near facilities block. Views from campsite. Bar area and food really nice - shame it closes at 10pm but understand it helps keep a calm site

Disliked: Could be better rather than disliked are: - showers need some TLC and no warm water for last few days. - ground is very hard so need a big mallet and other options ( kettle bell : big rocks) for some guy ropes) - road is very steep and windy so not really an option to walk or bike into Aubagne but there is a bus service right outside the campsite

Powered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Great site, so glad we stayed here. The team, who gave us a lovely welcome and are really friendly & helpful. We had a free camp pitch with electric hook up on the upper terrace which gave a lovely view along with piece & quiet as we were away from the toilet block and all the static tents & cabins. There are separate male & female facilities all well maintained and cleaned thoroughly everyday. The small on-site pool was also well maintained and the lovely bar (that also served food) is a great addition to the facilities as the site is approx 10min drive to the town of Aubagne. The quiet after 10pm makes this site a great place to stay for access the the French south coast.

Disliked: The mosquitos, nobody’s fault but make sure you have repellent & bite cream

Powered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Peaceful with lovely views. Very clean.

Disliked: Wifi was rubbish. Very poor signage as to where you were pitched. Hook up was so far away we had to borrow an extension. Up a hill with no where to walk to in the evening although there was a bus into the local town/train/bus station.

Powered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Staff were very helpful and friendly It’s free camping they give you an area to pitch in and as long as you can reach the EHU you pitch where you want ( you can even borrow a longer lead if you need one) Loads of trees so it easy to get shade Nice little swimming pool

Disliked: There is just one toilet and shower block so it’s quite a walk from the other side of the large site The roads and paths are rough unmade stone and quite steep in places There are only 3 toilets in the shower/Toilet block and one of those was out of order during our stay We did suffer with mosquito bites
