It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful site in carefully tended gardens on France's Opal Coast
- Indoor heated pool and kids’ playground, picnic and barbecue by ponds
- 10 minutes’ drive to Berck-sur-Mer town, beach and theme park
Seaside holidays in France used to mean mammoth drives from the Channel ports to the Mediterranean or the Atlantic. But these days more and more people (but not too many, happily) are discovering what the locals have known for centuries about the northern Pas-de-Calais region and its inviting Opal Coast: not so much a hidden gem as an overlooked treasure trove of wide beaches, wild cliffs and welcoming old towns.
On spacious grounds lined with cherry trees and overflowing with flowers, Caravaning les Cerisiers echoes the natural beauty of the area, while taking care to thoroughly look after its guests. The site has been set up with disabled access and families in mind; you can hire cots, baby baths and high chairs (more room in the car for essential teddy bears) and there's a laundry for washing sand out of togs (as well as the nearby beaches, a kids’ playground surrounded by soft sand is on site).
It may be hard to prise the kids and everyone else from the pool, where the glass dome lets you view the wide blue skies while you swim, float or frolic in water warmed to 27 degrees. Fortunately, the attractions nearby are more than a match...

Local attractions
You might head into Berck-sur-Mer (10 minutes' drive) for supplies or to hit the beach and find yourself diverted: not by roadworks (hopefully) but by this attractive seaside town. The centre teems with tempting bakeries and cafés and in warmer months, weekly markets take over the high street.
Berck's wide beaches are safe for bathing and sand yachts are a novel way to cruise the dunes; try them along with jetskiing and kite surfing on the seafront, or take boat cruises around the bay. Adrenalin junkies can hit greater speeds at the Parc d'Attraction de Bagatelle (10 minutes), a theme park with screech-inducing rides. When the briny looks uninviting, Aqualud Parc Aquatique (30 minutes) is on hand with a jungle themed waterworld of slides and pools.
Windswept or soaked in sunshine, the Baie d'Authie (20 minutes) is a wild contrast to the town. Trails lead across salt meadows bristling with rare edible plants, while in the watery hollows you can pick sea lavender and spot tree frogs. Locals aren't sure why the pinniped and grey seals showed up on the sandbanks nearly 40 years back, but they're clearly not going away. And who could blame them...?
