  • Leafy family site surrounded by castles, abbeys, gorges and caves
  • A 10-minute walk to the spectacular old town of Saissac
  • Outdoor pool, restaurant, bar, play area and games room
It’s not just about the pizza at this fab family site, skilfully crafted before your very eyes by one of the Camping La Porte d'Autan owners. Nor is it about the cassoulet… or, indeed, the Fitou, Corbiere, Minervois, Blanquette de Limoux fine wines… all of which are within sampling distance at the handsome restaurant. Non, the first checklist item to rave about on bragging texts, calls and social media posts to those still stuck at home (ha) is the fab vista unfolded around you, both on site and in the immediate surrounds. For they are mighty fab indeed: Camping La Porte d'Autan is a leafy site in the foothills of the spectacular Black Mountain or Montagne Noire, between the Aude and Tarn departments of Languedoc-Roussillon. It’s 10 minutes’ walk from the splendid old town of Saissac, which overlooks the Gorge of Vernassonne almost 500 metres below as well as the valley plain between Carcassonne and Castelnaudary: do, really, bring your camera… It’s a fine, green and remote setting here, with spacious grassy areas under the trees and plenty of room for family games all around. There's a heated outdoor pool and paddling pool, as well as other leisure facilities including a playground with trampoline, table tennis, games room and evening entertainment such as live music. A shop selling groceries and wine is also on site; more shops including a butcher’s, bakery, grocery store and pharmacy are just down the road in Saissac.

Liked: What a beautiful and peaceful site. We booked one of the "privileged pitches" at the edge of the site which gave us wonderful views towards the Pyrenees. In the first week of July the site was really peaceful and quite, we often had the pool to ourselves. It was getting busier by the time we left mid July, but still very quite. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. The facilities were clean, and although the main block is closed during the night there were always facilities available so this wasn't a problem. The pool was great, clean and tidy. We also appreciated the "eco" credentials with the ability to recycle. Sassiac is a short walk away and a lovely place to explore. There is a supermarket near the entrance which was very helpful. We had a great two week holiday and if we are every back in this area would certainly return. We highly recommend this site.

Liked: Owners very helpful. The trees were scraping our auto trail roof so they allowed us to park on the access road in a cul de sac of pitches. Despite the hot weather the ground was wet (prob due to tree coverage) and the wheels spun in the mud. It’s very remote and windy z bends to access uphill. Town very quiet. Carrefour outside sure w cheapest diesel we’d had

Disliked: Trees scraping our Motorhome roof

Local attractions

Local town Saissac has been settled for centuries around the 10th-century château – one of the biggest castles in the region and the oldest one of the Cathars. Reach its strategic position at the entrance of the Black Mountain from the side of the village; the castle is open daily. For day trips, it’s well worth the 55 minutes’ drive to the Gouffre de Cabrespine, one of the biggest caves in the world open to the curious public, and one of 24 caves in the south of France making up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also UNESCO-listed are the Limousis caves (50 minutes), and a historic destination of a different flavour at the spectacular Canal du Midi, just over an hour’s drive away. Must-see urban sites from here include the 14th-century bastide town of Revel, 20 minutes away; Castelnaudary, within half an hour, and another UNESCO World Heritage Site in the medieval city of Carcassonne, 35 minutes’ drive away.
