  • On 12 hectares of countryside among the Périgord hills
  • Horse riding centre on site for horse and pony rides
  • Two pools, bistro and activities including themed and food nights
What a site to trot along to. Canter off out into the wild Périgord from Aquitaine's Camping Les Tourterelles, a fab countryside setting among hills and mountain bike trails, castles and caves – and with its own riding stables right on site. Guests can saddle up at Les Tourterelles's Angie's Ranch for a hack into the hills and countryside by horse or pony; no probs if you're a beginner, as Angie will fully supervise you learning the reins. Those who prefer to get about by pedal have a mountain bike hire centre close by and an extensive network of trails all accessible from the site. Or one could be very serene indeed, and potter around the local towns and villages to ensure a full acquaintance with Dordogne gastronomy... Tourtoirac is five minutes away and Thiviers 20. Be as active or as idle as you wish on site too, with activities of all sorts for the former, and shaded and sunny spots over 12 hectares for the latter. A big pool is to hand for experienced swimmers, alongside a smaller pool for smaller splashers and space alongside both to lounge. You can also dive into (or not) heaps of sports activities arranged by the amiable team, part of an extensive programme of daytime summer entertainment that includes the likes of treasure hunts and orienteering. Tired yet? Bistro time, for eats at all hours, takeaway food, and a bakery service running daily in summer... then to the bar, for pool, general mingling and making new pals – or not – over sporting events on the widescreen TV. Possibly try not to fill up too much at the bistro and bar, as evening sees yet more entertainment for guests, in the form of restaurant theme nights, horror evenings and disco nights.

Liked: Lovely traditional campsite, fabulous swimming pool, great service. Well sized pitches with lovely outlook and shady. Mostly only horses neighing and owls calling was heard. Can't fault the site or the team. The stables were a great bonus, lovely ride and great for younger children who love being around the horses. Good selection of ponies/horse for all ages and sizes.

Disliked: Only thing I would ask is for a clear "Curfew". Most campsites operate no vehicles between 11pm and 7am. Unfortunately the only bad experience we had was 1 or 2 other campers being unpleasant or inconsiderate. Wifi not good.

Power optional grass and gravel site (large)

Liked: Relaxed atmosphere. Owners very helpful and supplied small compost bin and bag for plastic and glass waste. Brilliant idea. We love having our holidays at off peak to enjoy the peace and quiet and realise that the facilities will be reduced, unfortunately we met a couple who were less tolerant and tended to complain about everything, luckily they only stayed one night.

Disliked: Unfortunately, pitchup information was incorrect as the restaurant or bar were not open until July. Owners were very apologetic and served beers during our stay.

Local attractions

The region surrounding the site has been peopled since prehistoric times: while this might not interest the kids, they may like the weapons and tools at the abbey museum in Tourtoirac, found during archaeological digs in the town. If the kids are meh on this, they'll very likely dig a trip underground to see the stalactites and stalagmites of Tourtoirac's caves, only discovered in the 1990s. Or drive 45 minutes or so to take them to the spectacular caverns and cave paintings at Lascaux, probably the best known in France. More adventurously, make like a Middle Ages knight with a trip to the medieval fortress of Château de Hautefort (10 minutes), which has become a famed film set in recent years and has free entry and regular events.
