- Rural site with fishing lake near the Périgord village of Monfaucon
- Heated swimming pool with waterslides and paddling pools
- Family-friendly site with lots of activities in summer
Bags of things for the small sorts to do, and not a TV or tablet in site? That’s the fably family-friendly setup at Camping L'Etang de Bazange, a rural Périgord site just outside Monfaucon and half an hour’s drive from Bergerac.
Actually there is wifi here but there’s no need to mention it to the nippers, for if you’re here in summer they’ll be too busy with all the on-site antics to even realise they’ve missed out on screen time. Activities totalling a massive 30 hours a week are offered throughout high season, covering crafts, cookery, canoeing, sports and other shenanigans galore.
No pangs of jealousy from the grownups either – aqua gym classes, pétanque tournaments, vineyard walks and visits to local food producers are on the schedule for you (if you’ve not nipped off for a sneaky snooze, of course) and you can all join together for astronomy evenings, karaoke, night-time nature trails…
Now, that’s not to say that every hour must be accounted for; you’re more than welcome to spend your time at your own pace, relaxing by the heated swimming pool (with waterslides and a paddling pool for the smalls), or trotting off to the two-hectare lake to fish for carp and roach; no licence required so even novices can give it a try.
Between bursts of activity, slope off to the bar for drinks and ice creams on the terrace, and to order your bread and pastries for brekkie. Food trucks swing by for easy eats in summer, and there’s also a barbecue area for DIY dinners.

Local attractions
How long have you got? Grab as lengthy a stay as you can, for there’s heaps to do locally on top of all the on-site stuff. If you’re coming to the Dordogne (area), you can’t ignore the Dordogne (river)… head down to Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (15 minutes’ drive) to paddle along its waters in kayaks or canoes, or board a boat trip.
See the scenery from on high as you zoom along the zipwires and treetop trails at AccroZarbres adventure park (25 minutes) or stick to ground level for walks or bike rides on local trails, or horse rides through the vineyards (with tastings if you’re of the appropriate age). Delve deeper still by donning a hard hat and wellies to wander through the caves and underground streams at Célestine Cave (45 minutes).
Time for a tipple? The winemaking hubs of Bergerac and Saint-Émilion are both within a 45-minute drive. If you’ve got the tiddlers in tow, perhaps steer towards a trip to the châteaux of Bridoire and Monbazillac instead (both half an hour away; the latter doubles as a place to sip its delicious dessert wines).
