  • On Egypt’s Mediterranean coast with easy access to private sandy beach
  • A 20-minute drive from Marsa Matrouh resort town
  • Pools for kids and grownups, restaurant, mini market
Think of Egypt and you probably think of pharaohs, pyramids and desert oases… What might not leap so quickly to mind is white-sand beaches, clear blue seas and infinity pools, but that’s exactly what you’re signing up for with a stay at Porto Matrouh Resort, 20 minutes’ drive from the port town of Marsa Matrouh. This is a spectacular area for beachy getaways – the sandy stretch of the resort’s private beach is an easy three-minute stroll away, and there are a stunning seven kilometres of beaches lining Marsa Matrouh’s bay, including the nearby Cleopatra beach. Wanders along the seafront are an absolute must here, letting warm sand tickle toes and the clear sea wash away any stress that’s still clinging. The harbour here was a base for Cleopatra’s fleet during the fight between Mark Antony and Octavian that began the Roman Empire. While watery escapades here may no longer have stakes that high, jetskis, motorboats, paddleboats and rowboats can be hired to get out on the waves, and it’s a prime spot for surfing. Of course if salty splashing isn’t floating boats, guests can opt for resort days – dips in any of the outdoor pools (some have slides and games for the kids), lounging in the Egyptian sun or signing up for horse riding will fill the hours before meal time, when supplies from the on-site mini market or dinner in the restaurant will satisfy hungers.

Local attractions

If a change of scenery is needed, the Porto Matrouh Resort team recommends a quick 30-minute drive along the coast to Agiba beach. Agiba means miracle in Arabic, and the turquoise waters and white sands of this sheltered cove certainly fit the bill – perhaps best avoided during the high season, it’s a quiet haven throughout the rest of the year. In Marsa Matrouh itself, head to Rommel’s Cave – there’s a museum here dedicated to German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, who holed up in the town’s caves to plan the north African campaigns during World War II. Further along the coast in El Alamein (a little over two hours away), history buffs can explore war cemeteries and a war museum focused on the same period. For those who are up to lengthier jaunts, the three-and-a-half-hour journey to Siwa Oasis would be well worth it for temples, museums, Greco-Roman tombs, fortresses and a glimpse of the Saharan Great Sand Sea. Venture in the other direction for urban days among the palaces, gardens, catacombs, museums, zoos and aquariums of Alexandria (four hours), the Nile experiences, markets, Sufi whirling and antiquities of Cairo (five hours), and the famed pyramids of Giza.
