  • Peaceful campground five minutes’ walk from Lake Wonboyn in NSW
  • Direct access to Nadgee Nature Reserve; Eden 25 minutes’ drive
  • Fishing, boat rental and bush walks; restaurant and coffee shop
Hankering after fishing for bream or salmon? Fancy messing about on a boat? Or just chasing some peace and quiet? You’re in the right place for all these things at Wonboyn Cabins and Caravan Park, 25 minutes’ drive from Eden in New South Wales. The campground is surrounded by pristine forests, unspoilt beaches and abundant animal and birdlife, which takes care of the peace and quiet, while fishing is available on Lake Wonboyn (five minutes’ walk), and you can rent boats there as well. There are sites and accommodation units for all types of camping holiday, and guests are welcome to borrow fire drums for campfires – when fire restrictions (and other usage restrictions) permit. Chances are you’ll end up at the Bowerbird Café at some point during your stay, with its tempting menu of old favourites like burgers, battered fish and pulled pork. And when you need an injection of caffeine, Dusty Road Coffee Roasters is the place to head for. The amenities block is situated on the topmost level of the park’s camping area. It is basic but clean and spacious, with two showers and three toilets in both the mens’ and the ladies’ areas. Other facilities include a coin-op laundry, with two washing machines and a dryer, plus washing-up sinks with hot water.

Bandicoot Park cabin (five person)

Liked: Enough space for everyone, clean place. Toilet in the cabin. Parking right beside.

Disliked: The cooking plate was behaving strangely. Not possible to be switched off, pulling the plug was the safer option.

Local attractions

With bushland and oceanside landscapes ranging from rugged coastal heath to rock pools and dramatic coastal cliffs, there are myriad walks to be had in the vast Nadgee Nature Reserve (accessed from the campground). This carefully preserved World Biosphere Reserve stretches to Mallacoota (an hour’s drive) north of the Victoria state border, and you can cool off with a dip into the sea in summer, or look out for humpback whales offshore during spring months. You might also spot whales in the clear waters of Twofold Bay (half an hour). Learn more about the historic whaling trade among the whale skeletons and model boats at Eden Killer Whale Museum (25 minutes), and follow sections of the Killer Whale Trail from the town north along the Sapphire Coast to take a guided tour of Davidson Whaling Station (half an hour). Just north of Nadgee is Beowa National Park (25 minutes), known for its scattering of surfing beaches and more than 50 revered Aboriginal sites, including rock shelters, campsites and long-distance travel routes.
