Surfing the waves? Walking the cliffs? Whizzing through the air on a rollercoaster? Whichever way you want to get wild, Go Wild Adventures is a great place to start. This fab site in Carmarthenshire was set up by outdoor activity experts and they’ve picked a pretty good spot on this wooded hill, with views towards the Gower peninsula, the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The expertise extends further, this peaceful hilltop haven has been planted a five-minute drive from the village of St Clears, where there are shops, a pub and a chip shop. With that combo, you could stay forever… Contact the team in advance if you’re up for something adventurous in the surrounding area: they can arrange kayaking, rock climbing, archery and horse riding. Even if you don’t delight in dangling on ropes or galloping through valleys, the helpful proprietors will happily kit you out with a firepit and a first load of wood for free, for your fireside singsongs and your outdoor cookouts. If you're hankering after active antics in easy reach, make the half-hour trip to Heatherton World of Activities: it’s all going on there, from fishing and golf to go-karting, zipwires, paintballing and walking on water.

Route directions

Take the A40 from Carmarthen to St Clears and follow this road for approximately 10 miles. Ignore the first sign to St Clears and follow signpost to "Sancler /St Clears /A4066". At the roundabout, take the third exit signposted Pendine, Laughane, St Clears A4066. Follow the road to the traffic lights and go straight over through the village. Take first left into Station Road in front of Natwest Bank (B4299) towards Meidrim. Go over the level crossing, up the small hill, few bends into the countryside. Follow the road for half a mile and then drop down a small hill. There is a cream cottage with a lay-by on the left, and a thick red line starts in the middle of the road - turn immediately left. The visibility of the entrance is poor but you will see a footpath sign and the sign for Penlan. Follow the concrete driveway uphill for a quarter of a mile, until you reach the farm yard. Please do not follow sat-nav directions.

Local attractions

If your version of wild includes waves, hit the beach: between Tenby and Freshwater West (half an hour’s and 50 minutes’ drive), the south Pembrokeshire coast has top surfing conditions, and there are many places to hire, try and take lessons. Equally, sandy stretches like Saundersfoot and Pendine (both half an hour) are suitable for paddles, swims, digging and snoozing. For those more into walking by the waters, or above them, the cliffs, dunes and heaths of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path beckon: take a stroll from Tenby to the limestone cliffs of Penally for prize-winning views to Caldey Island, or launch out from Lydstep (40 minutes' drive) taking in the sea caverns and Manorbier Castle. Tenby has a top castle of its own, and the harbour’s where you catch seal-spotting sea trips or boats out to the peaceful sanctuary of Caldey Island, a top pick for hiking, wildlife watching and buying handmade chocs and perfume from the monks who live there. Wilder still are the beasts at Manor Wildlife Park and at Folly Farm, both half an hour away, but far less terrifying than the t-rexes and pterodactyls at Dinosaur Park, the same distance away. If they haven’t got your pulse racing, there’s only one option left: the rides and slides of Oakwood Theme Park are also half an hour off, with every possible way to get flung about at height, at speed and with added water.
