  • Family-friendly site in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Outdoor heated swimming pool on site
  • Less than 30 minutes’ drive from Oakwood Theme Park
Peace, the Preseli Hills and an outdoor pool where you can watch the kids splash around from the comfort of the courtyard terrace… think you could handle some of that on your hols? If so, pitch up at family-friendly Trefach Holiday Park, minutes from the hills of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Trefach is a peaceful and secluded site in a remote location with scenic walks around the local countryside, but it’s within driving distance of loads of things to do too, like visiting the fishing villages and coastal towns of Tenby, Haverfordwest, Dinas Cross and Fishguard, tracking down some of the best views in Wales, or hitting Blue Flag beaches for watersports and lounging. On site, there’s a play area and games room to keep the kids entertained alongside the heated pool, and a clubhouse and bar-restaurant serving up seasonal entertainment and meals.

Liked: Staff were friendly and welcoming. We had a nice meal in the clubhouse the day we arrived. We didn't stay long however because the door to the clubhouse was kept open and it was too cold not comfortable at all.

Disliked: Firstly, grass cutters were around the site in the pouring rain....absolutely ridiculous. The guy with a strimmer came so close to the tent there was wet grass all over the base. As our tent was brand new we didnt want grass stains. I approached him and he said he would return with a blower. But failed to show up. I rang reception to complain and was told someone would come. But again they failed to show up. We couldn't get the grass off as it was pouring with rain and just sticking to the tent. Very disappointing customer service. Secondly, the nearest toilet/shower block were locked without notice or explanation despite being told on check-in that we would have use for the duration of our stay. Facilities were not maintained well or very clean.

Disliked: Small pitches on a slope, arrived bank holiday Monday after a 3hr drive and the club house had run out of food so had to drive again to find somewhere for dinner.

Liked: The clubhouse is a god send as the site is in the middle of nowhere, no local pubs, shops or civilsation for miles. The outdoor pool is great for the kids! The staff were lovely too.

Disliked: The toilet blocks were pretty grim when we arrived, it was extremely busy and there had been rain so you have to expect a bit of muck. Even though they are cleaned on a daily basis, some cleaners were better than others. I would say, cleaning more often would be a good idea. We also stayed on the last week of August, the menu was very limited as they were getting ready to shut down for summer, no rice to go with the curries and half of the menu had been scribbled out. The location of the site is very rural, which is lovely and quiet but you do have to drive for over 30 minutes to get to anywhere interesting. The pitch was very hard, not easy to get the pegs into the ground.

Powered gravel caravan site

Liked: Level pitch Good activities for children Nice clubhouse with good food and drink

Disliked: One shower block could do with upgrading as toilets breaking and lights not working on times As showers share toilet areas need more housekeeping as get wet and dirty quickly No grey waste disposal Not enough outside seating by clubhouse so limited us spending time there as couldn’t take dogs inside Wi-Fi only available by clubhouse and then only with password

Local attractions

You don’t have to stick to fishing villages while you’re at Trefach Holiday Park: several towns are within driving distance of the site and you can take part in festivals, traipse around farmers’ markets or empty your wallet in the shops while you’re there. Pembrokeshire’s arts and crafts capital, Narberth, is about 15 minutes’ drive from Trefach and the ruins of the Norman Narberth Castle lie just above the town. Slightly further afield, make the 30-minute trip to Cardigan for the National Wool Museum, New Quay Honey Farm and taking a boat out to dolphin-spot in Cardigan Bay. Pack a picnic for a day in the Preseli Hills: explore on two feet or from horseback, and take in the views towards the Irish coast in the west and the Brecon Beacons to the east. See if you can spot bluestones just like the ones that make up part of the inner circle of Stonehenge and ask yourself whether the stones at Stonehenge were really transported the 180 miles from here. Take the kids to Oakwood Theme Park at nearby Narberth for a hair-raising experience on adrenaline-fuelled rides, or try something a little more sedate with go-karting or panning for gold in them thar hills. If rollercoasters aren’t their speed, try Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo, less than 30 minutes from Trefach, where they can visit the exotic animals in the zoo or get up close with the farm animals in the barn. Elsewhere around Pembrokeshire and in the national park, there are gardens, vineyards, adventure farms, castles and more to explore, with plenty of options for wet days too: try slithering among the reptiles at Dragon Reptiles or jumping around the giant adventure playground at Bluestone National Park Resort.
