General
- Adults-only site on a peaceful 200-acre estate with beach access
- A 25-minute drive from Dumfries and 35 from Carlisle
- Seven coarse fishing lakes and fully stocked tackle shop on site
Calm water and a haven for nature, lakes sure are peaceful… so how do you fancy a stay on a 200-acre private estate with seven of them on site? Stays at the adults-only Broom Caravan and Campsite come with (yep, you guessed it) seven lakes and an array of wildlife to spot, including the rare natterjack toad, badgers, deer, bitterns and dingy skipper butterflies.
Keen anglers will be in heaven here – the site is 100 metres from Broom Fisheries’ bankside, so you can simply roll out of bed and set up for the day. The coarse fishing lakes are packed with a range of specimens, such as barbel, bream, rudd and carp, and there’s a fully stocked tackle shop on site for bait and other supplies (so don’t worry if you leave any kit at home).
Not a fishing fan? Not a problem… these peaceful surrounds are also splendid for a stroll around the lakes instead. Four-legged friends are welcome, so feel free to bring one along for some company while you wander. There’s also access to a beach for folk who'd like to swap lake views for seaside ones.
When you’re up for venturing further afield, this spot makes a great base to see more of Dumfries and Galloway and beyond; guests can choose between historical market towns like Annan (less than 10 minutes’ drive) and livelier cities like Carlisle (35 minutes) when it comes to days out.

Local attractions
If you’re looking for an alternative to a day on the lake, immerse yourself in history instead. Annan Museum (less than 10 minutes’ drive) takes you through the history of the area, or you can talk money at the Savings Banks Museum (10 minutes), where there’s a fab piggy bank collection. Other options are the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum (25 minutes), located on the site of the former RAF Dumfries airbase, and the Dumfries Museum (half an hour), with the world's oldest working camera obscura.
As for historical sights, check out the triangular Caerlaverock Castle (25 minutes), which is surrounded by a moat and lawns, or the romantically named 13th-century Sweetheart Abbey (35 minutes). Alternatively, a visit to the grand Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (50 minutes) can be topped off nicely with a treat in the tearoom.
If shopping is on the cards, Gretna Gateway Outlet Village (20 minutes) is the place for some retail therapy.
You can pay your respects to Scottish poet Robert Burns in Dumfries (25 minutes), taking in the statue, the mausoleum burial site and the museum at his former home, which houses various possessions including manuscripts and letters.
