  • Adults-only family-run glamping site 15 mins from Glastonbury
  • Reconnect with nature with a stay in a wildflower meadow
  • Haven for ramblers, cyclists and adventurers
Tiring of the pace of modern life? Get back to basics and reconnect with nature during your stay at Banbury Meadow, a small family-run glamping retreat just outside the village of Butleigh, 15 minutes’ drive from Glastonbury town in Somerset, South West England. Banbury Meadow is a walker's paradise: it's within easy reach of a network of footpaths and bridleways, or you could head in to Glasto, where you can climb Glastonbury Tor then follow the Monarch’s Way walking route to Wells. More of a cycler? Get in the saddle and bike along routes 3 and 26 of the National Cycle Network or explore the West Country Way. Once you’ve completely tired yourself out from your adventuring, Banbury Meadow is a top spot for relaxation – it’s a wildflower meadow, so you’ll be surrounded by butterflies and birds, buttercups and orchids. When you’re feeling peckish, you can get set up in the kitchen or go a bit more rustic by firing up the barbecue. Need to pick up supplies? There are a few supermarkets within 10 minutes’ drive that should see you right. Once you’ve cooked up a storm, relax next to the firepit looking out over the meadow to the Mendip Hills and Glastonbury Tor or curl up in front of the woodburning stove for a night in. If you fancy treating yourself, there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive and a couple of pub-restaurants within easy walking distance.

Local attractions

There’s more to Glastonbury than the festival (though Banbury Meadow’s just a half-hour drive from where it’s held): as well as climbing the Tor, make pitstops at Glastonbury Abbey, the Shoe Museum and the Somerset Rural Life Museum before poking around the shops. If your appetite for retail therapy has been well and truly whetted by Glastonbury, take a slightly different way back to the site for an afternoon burning through your cash in the designer and high street stores at Clarks Village Outlet. Rather spend your time in the past than the present? This is a top spot for history buffs: the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Haynes International Motoring Museum are within 20 minutes of Banbury Meadow, and Montacute House, Wells Bishop’s Palace and Wells Vicar’s Close are just a little further afield. Fancy a getaway free of humankind’s fingerprints? Get out in nature at Ebbor Gorge or get your birdwatching on at Ham Wall RSPB, then dive below the earth’s surface at Wookey Hole caves. Top it all off by cheersing to your fab hols at Wilkins Cider Farm and Burrow Hill Cider and Brandy Farm, half an hour from Banbury Meadow.
