Quiet grass pitches

General

  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops

If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel.

Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out.

Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance.

Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials.

If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry.

The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

    How unwelcome we felt.

From the manager...

Sorry that you felt unwelcome.
But issues had to be addressed regarding your booking. This was carried out in a polite manor which you seem to accept while on site. It was unfortunate that members of staff had to keep addressing issues and due to covid-19 these points where valid. I will remind you of the issues: Extra people arriving with out us being notified, no track and trace details, no payment until asked. Awning erected not booked or paid for until asked. Car booked and paid for but this vehicle was a camper van. Party members being constantly reminded to wear face masks when using the shower/toilet block. mobile number provided was incorrect. The persons number that had been used on the booking has reported this to pitchup.com. I hope that you can appreciate we are trying our best to keep customer and staff safe in these difficult times.

Very friendly staff, helpful. Booked extra large pitch which was really big, no ones fault but it was quite muddy. Disappointed that had to pay extra for wi fi and for the awning considering we had booked extra large pitch. We are new to motor homing so perhaps this isn’t unusual. Spotless shower/toilets. Water temp in male and female showers on the cool side, but again perhaps that’s just our preference that we like a warm shower. Ideally placed for getting around. Did lovely walk to Lulworth cove over fields, then caught bus back. Train station and good bus links just outside of the site. Need to say a big thank you to the staff for keeping the site so lovely.

the toilet/shower block cleaning time is not appropriate, about doing late morning instead of peak use time?

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately they have to be cleaned in the morning because they have been used quite a lot after the evening clean by the time the morning comes around, it is very difficult to find a suitable time for this to be done, it is never convenient I am afraid. If we do not we would not be able to have them open at all.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions.

Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out.

Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
