  • Peaceful meadow site in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse
  • A 10-minute drive from Christchurch and 15 minutes from Bournemouth
  • Barbecues and towels to hire
All set for a stay in peaceful rural Dorset surroundings? Head for Heronshaw Meadow, where pitches are in a meadow surrounded by fields and trees next door to a well-established guesthouse. Families, couples and well-behaved dogs are all welcome at this quiet site in the grounds of a pretty 17th-century farmhouse 10 minutes’ drive from Christchurch. Mike and Andrea are your friendly hosts here, and they’ve set everything up to be as convenient as possible. Guests all have access to toilet and shower facilities, a kitchen and washing-up area, picnic tables for your outdoor meals and a reception area where you can hire towels and barbecues or pick up hints on where to go locally. If you need some ideas in the bag before you head off, perhaps plan for strolls on the 2.5-mile Throop Loop walk which runs next to the site, days of golf/fishing/paintballing a few minutes’ drive away, or outings to the coast at Bournemouth, Mudeford Quay and Hengistbury Head (all within about 20 minutes’ drive). A couple of pubs are within a few minutes’ drive if you fancy heading out for dinner; barbecues and campfires are permitted on site if you’d prefer to stick to fresh-air meals on site, and a couple of decent-sized supermarkets are 10 minutes’ drive away for all the necessary bits.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Great site in a great location. Very friendly owners and well maintained toilet and shower facilities. It's basic but everything you need for a comfortable stay!

Disliked: Mosquitoes!! NOT fault of the site of course, I just note it here to recommend people take a good repellent. Think we just got unlucky with the numbers of them but don't let it put you off!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Płace is small but just right when you are travelling with kids as that can enjoy playing in the field and you can keep an eye on them. There are clean toilets and warm showers as well as the access to the electric so you can plug your mobile charger or a hairdryer! The owners are very pleasant and helpful. Felt very welcome. Will definitely visit again!

Local attractions

If you’re keen to get active on your holidays, bring along your clubs for a round at Parley Golf Centre or set off for skiing, snowboarding and skibobs at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre (both five minutes’ drive away). There are walks galore too, at places like Stour Valley Nature Reserve (10 minutes) and Moors Valley Country Park (15 minutes), which also has bike hire and a Go Ape treetop trail. You can fish at the country park too if you like, or at River Stour Throop Fishery (10 minutes). Dorset’s coastline may well be calling too, whether you fancy a day on the sands at Bournemouth beach (15 minutes), a stroll through Hengistbury Head nature reserve (15 minutes) or a day of watersports from Mudeford Quay (20 minutes). There’s also a lot to explore at Highcliffe Castle (20 minutes), which has woodland walks and manicured gardens as well as the castle itself to visit – and there’s a beach a short walk away too. Meanwhile, if the weather dampens any outdoor plans, Splashdown waterpark (25 minutes) is a good option for family days out.
