Ashbourne Woods: Wild camping at its best

General

  • Peaceful, rural and hidden away site on 68 acres of woodland
  • Campfires encouraged
  • Toilets, hot showers, laundry room and communal fire area

Have a secluded and hidden away stay at peaceful and rural Ashbourne Woods near South Brent in Devon, in a range of accommodation to suit all outdoor holiday sorts.

The site is set on 68 acres of woodland, fit around a growing forest with accommodation areas carefully laid out by the helpful and friendly owners, and is a mere ten-minute stroll from a cosy and rather fab eleventh century pub. And as befits a rural and tucked away site such as this, campfires are encouraged here, so bring along the sausages and marshmallows for toasty evenings under the Devon stars...

Ashbourne's main camping area has a shared fridge for essentials and a communal fire area, as well as water facilities, toilets, hot showers and a laundry/washing up area with hot and cold water and coin-operated washing and drying machines.

Pups are barking up the right tree at Ashbourne Woods too - they’re welcome across the site and accommodation types, and the two and a half miles of dog-walking tracks nearby will make a stay for pooches here anything but ruff.

Beautiful peaceful woodland setting with private pitch and fire pit.07/22/2021

We only booked one night here in a lovely camping pod but would love to visit again! Warm welcome on arrival and good little shop for bits you might need. The site is a beautiful woodland setting with a mix of pitches on grass and amongst the trees with several pod/cabin options to choose from too. We had a lovely, clean pod in a private location complete with fire pit and fairy lights which looked so pretty in the evening! Picnic bench also provided and the pod has lighting, heater and an electric point outside. Perfect for an easy night away! The toilets and shower block were clean and we felt safe visiting during these covid times.

My son loved the fire pit, the cosy pod and the woods -especially the rope swing! He also enjoyed wheeling our gear the short distance from the car on the wheelbarrows provided.

Thank you for a lovely stay!

We stayed in the wild camp pitches. Its was fantastic and almost like the real deal.
The hosts were lovely and welcoming.
Pitch was a good size and wheel barrows provided so cars don't ruin the ground.
Plenty of facilities available and kept well clean and stocked.
Lovely pub within walking distance and plenty for the kids to do.
Highly recommended and will be going back ourselves again.

    Disliked:

Wheel barrows were fantastic, probably could do with some more as it was a bit stressful trying to get a hold of one.
A childrens play area would be lovely but equally understand the restrictions of the wooded areas.

We have just experienced the most wonderful four days camping at Ashbourne Woods, great for young, old and dog friendly this place gives you the most authentic camping experience but still the little things required such as hot showers, clean toilets and a little shop selling essentials and wood for the campfires which burn all around making this pretty magical. The staff are warm, helpful and friendly. It was the first time in a long time that we could honestly forget about the world as it is and get back to basics and enjoy the nature and beauty around us…..with a lovely glass of wine, music and a roaring campfire.
The local pub is pretty special too serving fantastic food it’s a lovely beer garden!

Beautiful woodland location set in 30 acres. Not sure how many pitches overall but it was very quiet when we stayed (not during school holidays). Excellent size pitch in close proximity to facilities. Opportunities to make camp fires in defined locations (e.g. rock surrounds) not only restricted to fire pits but these are also available. 15 minute walk to lovely Church Inn pub in nearby Rattery, serving great beer and food. Very welcoming host (didn’t catch his name - my bad) who really made us feel welcome. Would definitely go again 👍🏻

The wild camping spots were truly wild feeling. All enclosed in trees (which had perks of being better at keeping rain off of us and downsides of also not letting much sun in but that was okay). The staff were amazing and helpful and so friendly.

The facilities were incredible - hot showers, remote spots, pub down the road (with amazing food), shop sold lots of useful things and nice things like local cider and snacks, toilets were well cleaned, charging spots for phones, wheelbarrows to move stuff around when pitching up and taking down tents, all water on site is drinkable, and the site is beautiful. We paid to stay extra days almost immediately. The whole place is amazing and one of the best camp sites we've stayed on.

Local attractions

Tucked away needn’t mean being stuck for things to do... Set in South Hams on the south coast of Devon, the campsite is just off the accessible A38, ten miles from the sea and less than a mile from Dartmoor National Park.

Half an hour’s drive away is Compton Castle, a manor with orchard-filled gardens for apple-y ambling around, while the National Trust’s Church House on Dartmoor is just over a 20-minute drive north. For active types, horse riding and sailing can also be jumped upon around Dartmoor and on the coast.

Cast a line to Hatchlands Trout Farm, just ten minutes by car, ton fly fish on the well-stocked rainbow trout lake, or try the coarse fishing also available in the surrounding areas: ask the Ashbourne Woods team to point you and your rod in the right direction.

As well as the nearby beaches to treat and tire out, day trips to keep little holidaymakers happy also include Pennywell Farm (less than five minutes away) where animal fans can snuggle the pigs, collect eggs, help feed the lambs and even try their hand at milking the goats; Woodland Family Theme Park for daredevil youngsters (just 30 minutes away), with rides, falconry display and zoo farm, and Staverton Steam Railway, the first choo-choo-choice for little locomotive fans.
