Exeter View Stables: Campsite area

General

  • Relaxed, off-grid site with views over Devon’s hills towards Exeter
  • City centre a 10-min drive, Topsham 25 and Exmouth beach 35 mins away
  • Communal firepit; free-range eggs and firewood for sale on site

A lovely lookout across to Devon’s capital city is indeed a rather big draw at Exeter View Stables, a relaxed and friendly site in the leafy surrounds of this cracking county. If you’re one for eco-friendly expeditions, here’s a bit of news for you too: this park is completely off-grid – with all power coming from the sun – and it has a water borehole and compost toilet as well (and a rather smart one at that – even harsh compost loo critics among previous guests have given this one the nod of approval…)

When dusk falls, warmth comes from the communal firepit overlooking the surrounding hills and across to the estuary; you can even see the cathedral lights glimmer after dark. Build up your own blaze for eats or get the barbecue going – firewood (as well as eggs from Exeter View Stables' free-roaming chickens) can be bought at the park and supermarkets are about a 10-minute drive away.

Not coming by car? Exeter St David’s train station is the same distance away by taxi. There's a warm welcome for those toting their backpack along on foot or by bike – in fact the folk on site are so keen to encourage such behaviour they even offer a discount for eco travellers (be sure to book an eco pitch to take advantage of that). This is an off-grid site but facilities are available for phone charging (phew).

If you do have your own wheels, attractions in the local area to seek out include the northern part of craggy Dartmoor National Park, 20 minutes away, for hikes through woodland and ancient valleys.

Adventures done for the day, head back to base to unwind safe in the knowledge you’ll have a bit of peace and quiet – the owners of this site keep numbers low to ensure it never gets overrun.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

A well-priced, peaceful site with level pitches and a welcoming host07/21/2021

The owner (Ruppert) was very welcoming, laid-back, accommodating and friendly, offering us a wonderful flat spot under the shade of an oak tree keeping the van cool despite the hot weather. The view over the opposing hills and Exeter was beautiful as well as great for star gazing at night.

We liked the small size / number of pitches as it keeps it quiet and easy to use the facilities. Showers and compost toilets were great considering the value. We met a couple of long-term caravan renters on-site who were also very friendly and considerate.

The city is an easy to navigate 45-50 minutes walk down-hill with a small Tesco and local cafe on-route. It's pretty steep on the way back so a few beers are a good idea before returning to the site.

The site has some useful equipment on-site such as ramps (although the site is flat) and fire pits or a few bricks to keep your stove / BBQ off the ground.

    Disliked:

The pillon and electrical lines are a shame but do not stop you enjoying the view and are away from the pitches.

From the manager...

Aww thank you we are glad you had a great time, yes the star gazing and the moon view when it is out is something special :)

The pitch views were lovely and the cabin was cosy and had everything you need for a short stay. The showers were warm and clean and the compost toilet was clean.

Only tiny thing which would make washing up easier would be if there was warm water as well as cold- but saying that our dishes were fine!

From the manager...

The hut has its own washing up facilities with a kettle for hot water if required. Many thanks.

A true off grid experience, stunning scenery, lovely and quiet, Rupert is an excellent host, showers piping hot, and the composting loos were a first for us, spotlessly clean and no pong, a friendly camp chicken, and ideally situated for Exeter and all the surrounding Devon coastal resorts, can't wait to return.

Great views Great Location. Perfect off grid facilities which encourage people to get together. Loved the communal fire pit, and the compost toilets smelt better than many conventional toilets we’ve used. Our love for Rupert the most congenial and friendly host, is only surpassed by Gladys the chicken. Yes we will be back. Thanks so much.

This is a great small site close to Exeter. Its about a 45 minute walk into the city centre and a 30/40 minute drive to the northern and eastern Dartmoor tors. An ideal site for the climber or hiker who wants a good choice of pubs and restaurants at the end of the day.

The facilities are simple but well maintained with hot showers and composting toilets. We had a fair bit of rain but as the field is at the top of a hill we didn't have any issues with standing water and the ground dried out fairly quickly.

The setting is amazing, high up overlooking Exeter, particularly enchanting with a clear night when the city sparkles. Syd and Rupert couldn't have made us feel more at home and the peace, tranquility and ease that they and the site exuded was most refreshing. It is inspiring to see how innovation, vision and determination translate into an entirely off-grid, solar site - it can be done, and it is a valuable asset to the community. It offers a chance to experience a moment of life in a more natural, organic and considered way.
The bathroom facilities were clean and clear information was posted throughout re: Covid, and Syd and Rupert were accessible, without being at all intrusive. Simon's services with his campsite Taxi were so much appreciated.
Looking forward to coming back soon.

We were attracted to this site because of it’s clear description as an eco friendly site. Right from the point of booking the communication with Syd was exceptional.
We had a wonderful pitch with the most incredible views. It is also the perfect spot for star gazing and we were lucky enough to see several shooting stars as the skies were clear.
We were particularly impressed with the fantastic compost loo. I can honestly say that if you are cautious about booking because of this...don’t be. It was probably the nicest toilet I have seen on any camp site! I will attach photos to prove it.
The shower was also spotless and worked really well. Syd provides free shower products and has a little library of books that you can borrow. She also sells fresh eggs, firewood and other products that you may need, you just pop the money in the honesty box.
The high level of customer care given by the friendly site owners Syd and Rupert really is second to none and nothing is too much trouble for them. We can’t wait to visit again.
Get booking, you won’t regret it!

The cabin was so nicely set up - very cute and cosy, with fantastic views over the city. It had everything we needed and there were lots of nice touches. The campsite itself was great - the toilet and shower were v clean and we couldn’t find any fault in them. Syd, the owner, was so helpful and friendly- she clearly takes a lot of pride in what she does!

Local attractions

As well as all the sights of Exeter, which include the cathedral, a clutch of Tudor buildings and the medieval Underground Passages in the centre, another place to spend a stint is Topsham village, a 25-minute drive away – the park here is a top spot for birding along the estuary or taking a tug boat over to the pub just across the water.

Further on towards the coast is Exmouth beach, a family-friendly, sandy space accessible on the train line (from both Topsham and Exeter), with restaurants and cafés to totter towards in town. Once the kids have worn out their bucket and spade, take them on the rides at Crealy Theme Park & Resort in Sidmouth, 20 minutes away.

Grownups might like to factor in a little time in this town too for roams around Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and ganders at the Regency-era architecture – if the kids start to moan, simply pack them off for more sandy times at Sidmouth beach.
