Chy Carne Holiday Park: View from touring field

General

  • Relaxed family park 10 minutes' walk from Kennack Sands
  • Licensed shop, pizza takeaway, fire baskets and chimeneas on site
  • Three amenities blocks with well-kept toilets and hot showers

If your holiday checklist includes gorgeous Cornish sea views, quick access to golden beaches and so much to do for mini campers that you can fine the kids if anyone dares utter the phrase ‘I’m bored’, seasidey Chy Carne Holiday Park should tick all boxes for your break.

This is a relaxed, spacious and spankingly clean site with a strong family focus, dog-friendly and close to acclaimed beaches like Kennack Sands (10 minutes' walk) as well as many of the main attractions and towns of Cornwall. Helston, Falmouth and St Austell are all within easy reach, and spectacular Kynance Cove is five minutes' drive away.

The kids can go 'Aaaarrr' and clamber around the play pirate ship, get competitive at the outdoor games or kick a ball around the grassy open space, while the bigger folk can sit back and prepare the barbecue, have a campfire on one of the Chy Carne chimeneas or fire baskets, or sit back with a nosh or a sip from the licensed shop (opening times and stock limited out of season).

There’s a pizza takeaway on site too if you can’t be bothered cooking (open until 11pm in peak season), so you can polish off a pepperoni before moseying along to sit with a real ale or local cider in the summer marquee bar: with its lighting, seating and cosy atmosphere you may decide to linger for a while…

The first-class facilities here have plenty of hot showers (extra charge applies), toilets, washbasins and washing-up sinks (four, to be exact) so queues are unlikely even in peak season, and as the three amenity blocks are in different areas of the park there’ll be no need for long hikes to the toilet at night. There’s a launderette on site too with two commercial washing machines and two driers.

Chy Carne welcomes well-behaved pets.

Cleanliness of toilet/shower block. Size and position of pitch (no.32). 5 minute shower. Tree cover for shade. Views to sea. Friendliness of staff. Availability of basic essentials in shop. Being able to have camp fires. Pizza and ice cream on site. Ann's Pasties in Helston is a must!

    Disliked:

Distance to walk to Kennack Sands more like 20/25mins than 10mins advertised. Proximity to other Cornwall attractions and beaches at least 1 hour drive (but then it is on the Lizard Peninsula so should have expected it). Would have been good not to have had to pay for Wi-Fi. Woken up by gathering of crows every morning!

On a rare occasion I guess the shower soap that is provided as complimentary can run out between the cleaners visits and hand soap in the toilets can equally have this minor issue but there are more than one dispenser provided in the toilets.

The beach is amazing, depending on your pitch the views are stunning. It’s a nice out of the way location, which for me was perfect.

    Disliked:

The showers are 50p for 5 minutes. There is a poster in each cubicle stating the reasons, whilst preventing waste water is a good one, stating that the pressure is improved and temperature stable not so much. I had a cold dribble of a shower everyday. Washing long hair is quite difficult in those types of conditions. As for the shower price is not included in the pitch price, this was the most expensive campsite I’ve been to almost £50 a night for an electric tent pitch.

Paying a £1 for a glass in the Marquee, this was not advertised or notified of before purchase. The owners should rectify this as it could be reported to trading standards.

The walk to the beach, though worth it, can be treacherous. The road way is a narrow one lane road with cars going up and down and the back way through the nature reserve though a lovely walk is not very good in flip flops.

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit

We appreciate that you took the time to read the information provided in the showers .
Water conservation and the reduction in waste does have a direct impact on the natural surroundings.
We have had no reports of pressure issues or cold showers at any point in any shower on site so we are at a lost to this claim if reported we would certainly would have rectified this issue
As for our tariff, this is made up dependant on your individual circumstances such as two adults and children with electric and added VAT.

No one is paying £1 for a glass in the marquee Its a deposit to unsure that the plastic cup is returned and yes its advertised, Information is provided at the bar and at each entrance of the bar area explaining this This is common place now in many take away bars. The cups are reusable so reducing the waste on one time use plastic got to be a good thing right and the cups are returned

Yes one road in and one road out to the beach "yes" and every body that walks should take care but it is a slow road and there are foot paths for pretty much of the way
For the longer walk to the beach via the gwendreath valley your advise to not wear flip flops is the best recommendation you have made as the ground going down the valley can be a bit tough win the feet.

We welcome and look forward to your return

Beach not really dog friendly although walkable
Felt toilets and showers were not always clean and lost 50p coins in the shower, these were reimbursed

From the manager...

We appreciate your recent visit

Situated at Kennack Sands are two beaches East and west The east beach is dog Friendly ad the west beach as restrictions at certain times. 10 minute walk on average to the beach, a little longer time to come back.
Unfortunately the showers and toilets are communal and can be left by the visitors not as we expect to find them but the facilities are being attended throughout the day and evening a minimum of 4 times a day as well as constant inspection. We can not account for why the machine would not accept your 50p and can not verify if it did or did not but as you say based on honesty the lost coins were reimbursed

Fairly well ran site changed our pitch didn’t want to be on a slope, so be careful we requested flat pitch the shop charge way inflated prices double normal prices also Pizza shop phew! £14 normal 10 inch. But great weather made our holiday it a fair trek to the beach and a killer to come back up a long steep hill about a mile nightmare. The camp is very isolated and about 5/6 miles from a normal type shop the people who run the place are OK 👍 shower is 50p for 4 mins.

    Disliked:

    Rip off prices very isolated

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit

Phew appreciate that you consider that the site is well run

Chycarne is a typical coastal campsite with level and gentle sloping ground towards the sea. We are blessed with a stunning location with amazing views.
The walk to the beach to many is easily achievable within 10mins and is approx 600m away down hill not a mile.
Yes the walk back up can be a tough one but I guess we can take your time is doing this or the option is to drive down and park.
The pizzeria is fairly priced and pizzas are 12" and the most expensive pizza is the big daddies meat feast that is loaded with expensive meats and is priced at £13.

Situated around Chycarne are many local shops within a mile or so and a Nisa supermarket is located in the next holiday park which is a 1 minute drive or 3 minute walk away. Many campsites do not have a shop of any description as they either they lose money or there is very little demand for them.

Local attractions

The clean, safe and award-winning Kennack Sands (with lifeguards on duty during the summer months) is a 10-minute walk from Chy Carne, and has shops and cafés as well as a dog-friendly stretch on one side: hum the theme from Jaws as you spot a basking shark, or clamber up the coastal path for scenic walks in both directions.

A short drive away is Kynance Cove, which is one of the most photographed spots in Cornwall: fool folk that you’re in the Med by snapping a pic here or at postcard-perfect Mullion Cove on a sunny day.

The Site of Special Scientific Interest Goonhilly Downs is on the doorstep, best known for its Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, once the biggest in the world and still with satellite dishes that can be seen for miles: the building of a new space science centre on the site was announced in 2011.

Let the kids loose too at the Lizard Point Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse before automation and now with a heritage centre with exhibits, displays and some of the original engines, or take them to drool over the dromedaries at Cornish Camels.

As it’s Cornwall, holidaymakers of an amphibious disposition will be in heaven with top sailing, surfing, scuba diving and other watersports along this stretch of Cornish coast, and several surf and scuba schools in the area for both newbies and water experts. Landlubbers will find plenty to do too: horse riding, bird (and shark) spotting, golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and more are all within reach.

Day trips include squawking at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, flying at the thrill rides of The Flambards Experience and Crealy Great Adventure Park, or browsing around the towns of Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance and Truro for seafood, shopping, more beautiful beaches and a boat ride to the ancient harbour at Marizion’s St Michael’s Mount.

Finally, round off your trip with an afternoon or evening at Penzance’s clifftop open-air Minack Theatre – squint a little bit at the amphitheatre and you could almost imagine you’re in Roman Britain…
