General

  • Green field site over six acres, in the grounds of the a country pub
  • Five minutes' drive from Billingshurst and Wisborough Green
  • Modern toilet and shower block with wheelchair-accessible unit

A site in the grounds of the 16th-century Bat and Ball Country Pub, surrounded by six acres of inn estate and just under an hour from London? If that sounds like dream holiday material, then sign up for a lushly scenic stay at Oakfields Camping five minutes from the villages of Billingshurst and Wisborough Green in West Sussex.

Oakfields is right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, minutes' walk from comely canals and within 30 minutes' drive of also-comely English villages like Petworth and Midhurst: be sure to wear your explorer's hat for this trip…

Once you've worked up an appetite from wandering the Downs, canals and villages of West Sussex, you won't have to go far to build your strength back up – head to Haywards Restaurant, in the Bat and Ball, a few steps from your pitch, for food and drinks to while the evening away.

This is an all-grass site, so there's plenty of room to kick back and relax after dinner, or you can hang around in the Bat and Ball and soak up the atmosphere.

Very nice site, right by the pub and perfect facilities that were perfectly clean. Stayed overnight in my VW campervan. Lovely people and quiet enough to stay in the van or could have gone in the pub if we wanted.
Would defiantly return and use again as an overnight stay. Lovely location too driving distance from the canal and some lovely walks

The place was very clean and hand sanitizer scattered about which was nice. Staff friendly. It's not cheap at £35 per night compared with others, but nice to have the pub next door.

    Disliked:

You can no longer take your own fire pit and must hire their pits at £20 per night.

I thought this was quite expensive as most sites we have visited this year supply a free fire pit as long as you buy the wood from them @ £5 a bag. Just think £20 is a little ott.

On arrival we was met with the lovely and super friendly owner ( so sorry I forgot her name ) she gave us a comprehensive tour of the site and explained the covid procedures that have been put in place. The site itself is immaculately kept with beautiful places to relax by the side of the pub/restaurant. Fire pits are available to hire although we didn’t indulge ourselves. The site is close to a road but I can honestly say this was no issue at all. Although they have grass pitches each pitch has matting under where your vehicle would park so we had no issues getting in and out. We didn’t even need levelling ramps as our pitch was flat as a pancake. Some did have a very slight slope but standard levelling ramps is all that’s needed. With it being a grass pitch I wasn’t expecting it to be so flat. Some lovely walks around including a canal that we found out about as we was leaving.
The toilet and shower blocks were spotlessly clean with ample space inside. Being in a motorhome it would have been nice to be able to pull over a grid to drain our grey water but they do have a grey water drain for caravan use. This really wasn’t a problem for us as we just took it away with us and emptied at our next site didn’t want to put it in the dislike section as I feel it would be too petty.

All in all a wonderful site kept and run by super friendly and helpful owners with a fabulous pub/restaurant within the grounds and a pretty village to stroll to during the day. What else could anyone want? Great weather - we got that too 😊

Local attractions

This part of West Sussex is a lovely locale and is crammed with things to see and do, such as the county's stately homes and historic houses, busy market towns, old and pretty villages, and – natch – the splendid Sussex seaside.

The 260-square-mile stretch of chalk hills that make up South Downs National Park are only a mile from Oakfields Camping. Many a hike is to be had here, including along the local stretch of the South Downs Way from Billingshurst, east to Eastbourne or west to Winchester, and the coastal walks around the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.

Family adventures at Fishers Farm Park are easily accessible from the site for family members of all ages; at nearby Horsham, take the crew to stalk each other through the violet labyrinth of the local paintball centre, or to the 90 acres of Chesworth Farm.

Also nearby is Petworth Park, a National Trust mansion with arty works by the likes of Turner and Blake, and a 700-acre landscaped park with the biggest herd of fallow deer in England.
