Lucy's Barn: Tipi

General

  • Simple field site in Kent with tap and electric supply
  • Brands Hatch racetrack and Bewl Water fishing within 20 minutes' drive
  • An hour by car from Canterbury and Folkestone beach

From Neolithic long barrows to Napoleonic forts, medieval castles to Second World War munitions sites, Kent is a county where the past seems very present. At Lucy's Barn, it's outdoor relaxation as your ancestors would have done it: a field, surrounded by trees and Kent countryside, with a water tap, electricity supply and little else between you, the peace of nature and the plentiful spread of stuff to see and do in the area.

Important business first: the nearest pub with food is in Stansted village, four minutes' drive away or a 20-minute walk. If you're into motors, the famed Brands Hatch circuit is five minutes away for race meets and driving experiences or for watery thrills, make for Leybourne Lakes Country Park (20 minutes) for scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing and the simple pleasures of swimming. The lakes are part of a 93-acre site of woodland, grasslands and marshes, full of wildlife and well furnished with trails for walking and biking.

If you're truly addicted to all things aquatic, Bewl Water (45 minutes) is where you go for boating and fishing on the huge reservoir.

A lovely big field with clean toilets and showers. Bit difficult to find but we got there! The angry farmer next door was obviously having a lie-in as no guns or dogs in the night. He had done his manure thing by the power points. Poor man!

Pitches are very big. With water taps on electric posts

    Disliked:

Sign very small so you have to keep a eye open for it, Had no one to meet us on arrival. And didn’t see anyone but a cleaner for the whole of our stay.
Yes there is toilets but no soap or mirrors.
Only one shower working out of 4 and no lights in free of them so night time was a nightmare.
No emergency numbers/fire points anywhere incase of emergency’s
Then the worse was at night. From 11/1 neighboring fields with people shooting
Keeping the whole site up, and again as 4.30/5 a man and his braking dog, and him shooting. This was very night for four night. I wanted to come home early but it was my partners birthday.
So instead of having a nice relaxing break we came home tried. And needed another break

    Large field and quiet

    Disliked:

Neighbouring land owner very rude and aggressive some sort of on going dispute with campsite owners. Shotgun shooting middle night , piles of manure next to electric points, i woke at 5 am this morning to a dog barking directly outside caravan opened window to see man encouraging dog to bark , asked him if he could stop it as it 5am to which i had a load of verbal abuse , told to f off and called a pikey. Explained this is a campsite and people are on holiday. Dispute needs to be settled as this would be very disturbing to a family.
Gate access Impossible turn in one direction will need to u turn further down road.

The quietness, the surrounding fields. Safe enough to let children run around on the field playing. Wild rabbits living at the end of the field.

    Disliked:

The shotgun noises in the middle of the night. The neighbours walk their dog around 4.30am and the dogs bark loudly. Horse manure behind every water tap post from the neighbours.

Getting out of the field is a bit tricky, if possible a mirror opposite would help.

    Disliked:

Nothing about the site. But neighbouring farm, the owner obviously has a chip on his shoulder & likes to shoot his gun & get his dog to bark at silly o’clock in the morning right by the tents. But that didn’t deter us.

Had a lovely stay at Lucy's Barn, first time with electric hook up which was quite a treat! Lovely large field, mostly flat, large hedges on road edge, lovely views the other direction. Toilets and showers impressive and cleaned daily, sometimes more often. Lots of space, a short walk to the local garden centre and Kent Fire Brigade Museum! Overall a nice peaceful space to camp and watch the sunset.

    Disliked:

Nothing to do with the campsite but it appears that the landowners of the adjacent land don't like campers and kept dumping fresh piles of manure immediately behind the fence by electric hook up/water taps and walking his dog behind the tents at 4.30am encouraging it to bark with a clicker! We actually found it quite funny and a good talking point with other campers so his plan backfired.
It was quite hard ground, maybe take some serious heavy duty pegs.

Easy booking, clean facilities, level pitches but some motorway noise.05/28/2019

Easy booking, toilets clean and roomy, field clean and grass a sensible length.

    Disliked:

All four shower/toilet units plugged into one electricity point for a pitch rather than their own dedicated supply, so one camper had unplugged a loo to plug their mobile home in. This meant 25% less shower/toilet units left with hot water and lighting.

We paid for electrical hookup as that was all that was left on the website - in reality there was loads of room for wireless camping and very few with power.

Lucy's Barn sign was not visible from the road - luckily had read another review mentioning this.

Could hear the M20 and farmer shooting rabbits all night.

Is exactly as described, very large field which is reasonably flat. The electric and water are on the posts where you pitch up. If you want to get back to nature this is the place. We were pleasantly surprised to find that four new toilet/shower units have been installed which is an added bonus.

    Disliked:

The entrance to the site is quite tight and at an angle. If you come down the road to the site the sign can easily be missed but there is a good turn around point about fifty yards down the road which also puts you at the right angle for the gate, we are a seven metre Motorhome and we had no problems. The only reason we gave four stars and not five is because of the entrance, as it is also on a slight slope and grass, if there is a lot of rain it might be a challenge (could do with some hardcore), also have not seen any sign of a grey/black emptying points for Motorhome’s. Toilets/showers are a really welcome addition but there is nothing to prevent treading grass inside as there are no mats at the moment.

Local attractions

If the birdsong on the site gives you a taste to see things wild and feathered, the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes' drive) is the spot for communing with the kingfishers and hailing the herons, throughout a spread of lakes, ponds, pools and reed beds. Wilder still, Howlett's Wild Animal Park an hour away has gorillas and leopards, moneys and the largest herd of elephants in the UK.

To get into Kent's history, you could start way way back with the Neolithic long barrow at Addington (15 minutes), then carry on to Knole Castle (half an hour) to see a 600-year-old building still looking pretty fine in its 1,000-acre deer park setting.

For a trip not quite so far back in time, take an hour's drive to New Romney for the start of the famed Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway whose steam engines will puff you pleasantly through the marshlands down to Dungeness. The deserted beach there is well worth a look and a photo opp; the sands at Folkestone (an hour) are far livelier while the Kent Battle of Britain Museum reminds you how this friendly coast was once a strategic frontier.

A similar distance from the site, Canterbury took some hits in the war but its 14th-century cathedral (on the site of a sixth-century one) still makes for a fine visit, as do the little lanes in the surrounding old town.
