Gemini Camp: Gemini camp is set in a 6 acre private nature reserve

General

  • Exclusive-use glamping site in a former horse paddock with green views
  • A five-minute drive to London Stansted Airport and 15 to Elsenham
  • Direct links to Cambridge and London by train from the local village

Gemini Camp’s worth booking whatever your horoscope says: this park’s in a private six-acre nature reserve, so you can have the wildlife-rich Essex surroundings and fresh air all to yourself, perhaps as an extension of a hol before or after a flight out of London Stansted Airport a five-minute drive away...?

The off-grid stays at this hideaway in a private nature reserve are in a luxury bell tent with a king-size bed; a field shelter with a woodburner, cooking and washing facilities – including an eco toilet and shower – are also to hand with views out across the greenery-filled former horse paddock whichever way you turn.

Settled in comfortably to watch planes swooping across the skies overhead then realised you’ve left something behind at home? The village of Elsenham with its local shop and pub is a 15-minute drive (or half an hour walk away on a car-free trail) for your essentials and the nine-hole course and gym at Golf World Stansted under a 10-minute walk also has a bar in the clubhouse serving food and drink if it’s sustenance you’re after.

Other villages to visit in this rural area include Stansted Mountfitchet (15 minutes away), home to historical hotspots like Mountfitchet Castle, a reconstructed Norman settlement and a toy museum, along with pretty Thaxted (also 15 minutes) and Finchingfield (25 minutes).

Back in Elsenham, a mainline railway station means you can also hit up the big cities thanks to direct services to Cambridge (half an hour) and London (55 minutes).

Such a fantastic place, a little piece of heaven to sit, relax and watch the local wildlife venture around the field and local woods.
Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a place to unwind away from the normal humdrum of life.

Hosts were incredibly easy to communicate with and very welcoming. The local area is really beautiful with lots of wildlife and animals. The bell tent was beautiful and very generously sized. We had everything we needed in the field kitchen too and the shower was lovely and warm and powerful! We felt spoilt by the additional and unexpected spaces like the ‘reading nook’ in the horse box, and second bedroom in case we got too cold in the tent (which we didn’t). All round a truly wonderful stay in a beautiful location.

Excellent location coming from London( without car), everything we needed for the weekend was there and the owners made us feel welcome and were on hand to help with anything. Can’t fault the stay and the little touches made it extra special (Fresh flowers, fresh eggs and plums picked that day). Perfect stay even in the rain!

Very welcoming hosts on arrival, excellent amenities with added extra touches on arrival for us ie milk eggs wine biscuits. Beautiful, quiet surroundings on a nature reserve with lots of wildlife close by, foxes and deer. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful retreat for excellent value for money.

Local attractions

For gentle hikes while in this part of south east Essex, head to the National Trust-protected Hatfield Forest a 15-minute drive away to wander lakeside or beneath the boughs of 1,200-year-old trees in a medieval-era hunting woodland; alternatively, take a 20-minute trip to Rushy Mead nature reserve for ambles along the bank of the River Stort.

You can stretch the legs around the 17th-century grounds surrounding the manor of Audley End House and Gardens 20 minutes’ drive north too or go further on to see the Jacobean-style Anglesey Abbey and its working watermill (45 minutes).

Slightly south east of here (and 50 minutes from the park by car) is Cambridge: visit this university city to punt on the River Cam or explore handsome colleges like King’s with its huge Gothic chapel, Henry VIII-founded Trinity and St John’s with its 16th-century Great Gate.
