  • Dog-friendly over-21s site on a peaceful East Sussex farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Scotney Castle, Bewl Water and Go Ape
  • Campfires and barbecues permitted; Eridge pubs 30 mins' walk away
Weekenders take note: this splendid farm site is a top spot for short breaks in the green East Sussex countryside. Nary a noisy tot or teen to be seen here: this site is reserved for the over-21s (although if your dog is under 21 in human or pup years, fear not – the rule doesn't apply to canine guests). The owners describe this place as being like 'a good village pub' – a civilised and sociable spot where you can chat with new neighbours or find yourself a quiet corner for some peace and quiet. And, while this site isn't actually a pub, the fine hostelries of Eridge are a half-hour walk (or short drive) away… This rural spot is also home to a herd of cows, whose occasional mooing is pretty sure to help get you in the holiday mood (as are the wildflowers, hedgerows and gorgeous trees). Another perk is that Campfire Weekends is adjacent to Eridge Park, an extensive deer park crisscrossed by footpaths, and there are plenty of places to go for walks and bike rides. Facilities here are kept simple and functional – it's a pick-your-own-pitch set up with the safari-style washing facilities and compost loos housed in a nifty trailer. Cold drinkable water is also available from a standpipe. Feel free to set up a campfire (obviously) or barbecue (rent one on site, or bring your own – off ground and no disposables, ta) during your stay here; the owners recommend Renhurst Farm Shop (five minutes' drive) if you're looking to stock up on local produce. No amplified music is allowed (from mobile phones or car or portable stereos) and there's a quiet policy after 10.30pm to make sure everyone can enjoy peaceful slumbers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: This campsite exceeded our expectations in every way. It is impeccably clean and superbly organized, and we particularly enjoyed the presence of picnic benches. The generous amount of space allotted for each tent creates a wonderful sense of privacy and isolation as if you have the entire campsite to yourself. As a group of mature campers, four of us who relish the experience of wild camping, this site proved to be an ideal match for our needs. We greatly appreciated the pet-friendly policy, the option for off-ground fires and BBQs, and the strict no loud music rule after 10:30 p.m. This campsite checked all the right boxes for us, and we were delighted to find that it lived up to its promises. The individuals overseeing the campsite were exceptionally friendly, engaging, and attentive, ensuring that our stay was as enjoyable as possible. Despite my initial reservations about compost toilets, our stay at Campfire Weekends showed me that when maintained properly, they are not a hassle at all. The toilet facilities were consistently clean, and they provided all the necessary supplies to keep them sanitized. Additionally, the toilets were cleaned three times a day, eliminating any concerns I had. Needless to say, I didn't need to rely on my own disinfectant wipes. Thank you for a fantastic experience!

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely big site with lots of space between pitches. Had to choose your spot well though as a lot of slope. Compost toilet well cared for and young staff came round regularly and made sure all emptied and clean. Lots to see and do in the area. Recommend food at Lazy Fox and breakfast in Garden Centre at Mark Cross.

Disliked: A bit of a hike if you wanted to visit a pub or eat out. The noise from the planes landing and taking off from Gatwick. Woke me up every morning as sounded like they were landing in the field. Shame as otherwise very peaceful, well managed site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I think your weekend has been affected by the troubles at Gatwick which hit the headlines. We have never had a comment about plane noise and can only presume that the chaos which hit Gatwick over this Bank Holiday Weekend lead to changes in their flight patterns. So sorry it affected your stay with us. Glad though that otherwise you got to experience what you should have here at Campfire Weekends - Campfire Weekends Team

Don’t get the bbq and logs unless you know they will be there.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Not too many people so there was plenty of space.

Disliked: Paid for logs and BBQ which was meant to be there for upon arrival for 5-6pm. Which ended up being a waste of time. The owners were coming back from a family holiday. They said that they had suffered delays so they didn’t arrive back and pass us the bbq and logs to cook some dinner on until 9:15pm. At which point it was just late. Grass was also kinda long to camp on.

From the manager: Our first and only poor review😒. (For those wanting to know about how most people experience our site please do read the other reviews!) I am so sorry you were affected by our late arrival. We have never had a family holiday with the extended family where we are all away together and our back up cover was also detained... a perfect storm. We will not leave anything reliant on Gatwick working smoothly again! Glad that you liked the space that we provide at Campfire Weekends. - Campfire Weekends Team

Disliked: Not allowed vehicle on yr pitch! It was howling gale and we could have done with using the car as a windbreak!!!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry you had such a windy experience on your weekend. As we do allow campfires, we do try to separate cars (fuel) and fire. Please do bring windbreaks etc .. we don't charge extra for that type of thing, again sorry it was so windy on your weekend hope we can host you again on a more clement weekend - All best Campfire Weekends Team

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: A picturesque location, lots of space with few tents so for the most part it was very peaceful. BBQ and logs were great value. There's a very nice cafe called Deer Park Cafe a few minutes drive away which was fantastic.

Disliked: Out of about 15 tents, 1 pitch didn't observe the rules, the rules ask for cars not to be parked by the tents to reduce risk of fire from the campfires but they kept thier car there for the duration, there is also a rule asking for no amplified music but they were playing music and being quite loud in the evening. They only settled down when their neighbours came back and asked them to be quiet, but the noise carried across the campsite, the site is over 21s only so we booked it for some peace and quiet so not ideal. The site is unmanned but perhaps a staff patrol every couple of hours would help.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback - it is always welcome and we are so sorry that you had to experience this type of noise on our site, thankfully it is rare. This is not what we are about and want to provide. We do have a duty phone number on our website and in the welcome pack of information, I hope too it was reiterated on check in, we would urge guests to ring us if any of our rules are being broken, we would then visit on request and rectify any issue arising, as this is how we maintain the environment we advertise. Again, so sorry you experienced this, but glad you got to enjoy our site in its usual peaceful state most of the time. We do accommodate a maximum of around 30 people in a 7 acre camping meadow, so there is lots of space, but we do ask everyone be respectful of our rules and others quiet enjoyment of these beautiful surroundings. We do hope we can host you again - Campfire Weekends Team
