Summer's here at last

General

  • Herstmonceux pub site alongside the 1066 Country Walk
  • Varied food menu made emphasising fresh local produce
  • Secluded setting; campfires allowed

The Bull’s Head… that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a… pub.

But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which you might think rocks, rather…

Facilities at the site include a modern toilet block, a water standpipe and a chemical disposal point, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the pitching field.

For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up dinner, plenty of pub grub options using mostly local produce can be had in the bar. You can even try and win a bottle of wine at the longstanding pub quiz on Monday nights: now there’s a reason to extend your weekend trip…

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Lovely little campsite. Just one small field. Very clean toilets and showers. Very mellow. Lovely local walks. Fires allowed and fire pits provided. We took our own wood, not sure if you can get there. We didn’t try the pub but like the fact that it’s so close, will definitely go when without kids. Were mainly adults on site but kids enjoyed kite flying and rounders as lots of space.

This is basically a field behind a pub, however it is a quiet site, the pub is brilliant, the facilities basic but functional - the shower was hot! Dark skies at night so star watching is good! Loads of space - was pretty windy the night we stayed!!

Lovely village pub, friendly staff and great food. Good level, roomy site and clean facilities, firepits and stacking chairs provided.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower facilities basic and will be too few at busy times. No rubbish bins. Unfortunately hot water not working in one of two toilets probably due to apparent damage to heater unit.

The friendly reception when we arrived, most welcoming indeed. Nice flat pitch in a good sized field. Good clean, but basic facilities which were perfectly adequate. We arrived late in the season so had plenty of space to choose from. Beautiful location with great views, picturesque walks and beautiful sunsets. Birdsong and stargazing around a firepit (which was provided by our hosts - for everyone to use) made a really relaxing get away from it all, kind of time.
The hosts were more than accomodating and extremely helpful with guidance to local walks and anythng that they could help with. The food at the pub was most excellent, vegetarian food available too. They even helped us with our dog who had been quite poorly by letting us have some gravy and sausage to tempt his appetite - and it worked!!

Beautiful area, great facilities, lots of space. The site is on 2 fields accessed through the pub entrance.
The views are great & there was such a lot of wildlife even in the main field. It's really welcoming & very clear where to camp as there are chairs & firepits set out, equally spaced apart in the field. I thought the facilities (considering you're in the middle of a field & facilities can vary so much from site to site) were really impressive & very clean - in the field I was in there were 2 large cabin loos, a stand pipe & washing up area & one shower in a large portacabin.
I didn't use the pub, but it looked really lovely inside & staff were friendly when I went in to pay.
Very peaceful area & easy to find & access within easy reach of lots of beautiful drives & walks.

Local attractions

With something called the 1066 Country Walk running past the site, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country…

The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold (allegedly) got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves.

The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rural Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre.

As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can take the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip up (or down) Hastings’s cliff railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight…

For less adrenaline-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches – the seaside is just a short drive away – or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls.

Meanwhile, mini battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.
