  • Back to basics farm site under the South Downs
  • Spotless facilities including a shower and toilet block added in 2019
  • Catering van with local produce freshly cooked for you
There’s something immensely satisfying about pitching a tent, building a campfire and lying back to gaze at the stars… all in the happy knowledge this is how it’s been done since our early ancestors first discovered mammoths taste better when roasted over flames. Pass the barbecue tongs. Guests getting back to basics surrounded by nature and forgetting about overflowing email boxes/underflowing bank accounts is the aim of June and co at the mighty popular (but def not overcrowded) Oakfield Farm Campsite, under the South Downs and at the head of the Cuckmere valley. It’s a working farm with space to camp rather than a commercial campsite, so you won’t find kids’ clubs, a bar or evening entertainment – just basic farm camping with spotless amenities, a very friendly owner and loads of countryside space to gaze at over the campfire. Pass the sausages. Logs and kindling are for sale on site as well as small gas cylinders and barbecue packs (or before you arrive you can order sausages, bacon, burgers and steak from the owners, who sell their own or local meat). A catering trailer is on site too for hot and cold drinks, sweets, biscuits, locally sourced bacon and egg baps, burgers, chips and more from its varied menu. For other campfire supplies, the petrol station within five minutes’ walk has most of the essentials (beer, wine, barbecue bits) and bigger shops and supermarkets are about 10 minutes’ drive away in Hailsham.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We loved how friendly the owners were, they obviously really care about their business and want you to have a good stay. The pitch we had in the adults only field was really pretty, it’s like a little orchard. We could watch the young cows in the field next to us, they slept a meter away from the tent, it was a real break in nature! The campsite was pretty quiet and the one noisy group were quickly shut down by the owners as they live on the site. We really liked the site!

Disliked: It’s not a dislike really just some info, if you stay in the adults only field you can’t drive up, you’ll need to park and carry your stuff around 20 meters so bear it in mind with packing! Also bring wet wipes as there are only two showers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: June and her team were so friendly and relaxed. Clean toilets, lots of space to pitch, and really handy to have a food truck on site. The lady who ran that was just the sweetest.

Disliked: Noise from nearby road was quite loud but didn’t disturb sleep or anything

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Really friendly welcome, VERY clean toilets and shower. Campfires, separate area for people with no children. Well run and very tidy. Have to take your rubbish with you so I think that keeps the site tidier. Cars are separate which I liked because people leaving early aren't starting their cars by your tent for example. The lady who runs the camping is absolutely lovely. She loves people. So much space for kids to play, massive. Really would recommend.

Disliked: You can hear the nearby A road

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely pop-up campsite close to Eastbourne beaches and amusement centres (there were a lot of amusement centres!!!). Toilets/showers were slightly dated but fine to use, and were kept clean. Owner was on site most of the time, and was very friendly and accommodating. She let us keep our trailer in the car park on our final day while we explore Eastbourne. You can drive onto the pitch to offload and load but keep cars in the carpark the rest of the time (safer for all the kids running around playing, and to prevent traffic noise at night and music playing out of cars). Car park is close enough. There was a caravan on site selling breakfast and dinner food (burgers, etc) but our food was too crispy (burnt) so we only used it one morning - but great to use when you don't have time to eat out. Note that pitches were closer together than I expected from previous pop-up camping but we still had plenty of space (more space than a typical campsite). Only down-side was traffic noise (A22) so if I go back I'd request a pitch on the far side of the field, or wear ear plugs. Kids slept very well. Tents pitched around the outer perimeter of a large field so plenty of space for kids to play safely. There were loads of kids when we went, all playing together and the campers were extremely friendly so there was a very good vibe there, and our children had loads of fun. I'd recommend the owners put in a central community fire pit in the middle of the field - that would make a great addition.

Disliked: Traffic noise from A22

Local attractions

The farm is well placed for seeing the best of Sussex east and west, the countryside and the coast, with walks, bike rides, country houses, gardens and cliffs all close by. The 100-mile South Downs Way runs from Winchester to Eastbourne; if you prefer to pedal, the 14-mile Cuckoo Trail passes through Hailsham on its route from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park (bikes can be hired near the site). Oakfield Farm is at the head of the Cuckmere valley, a grass chalkland and wildlife haven with views towards the River Cuckmere and the Seven Sisters, the chalk cliffs between Seaford and Eastbourne. Look out for the Litlington white horse carved into the chalk cliff and for Devil’s Dyke, the longest and deepest dry valley in the country and called ‘the grandest view in the world’ by John Constable. Both spots are, of course, where you should bring a picnic...
