Ready for a hol in England’s north east? Settle yourself in South Yorkshire at Waleswood Caravan and Camping Park, a 12.5-acre site right on the edges of the rather lovely Rother Valley Country Park. This is one complex where the amenities are as mighty fine as the surroundings, with a small shop and licensed café as well as newly developed shower and toilet blocks.
And other facilities in and around this well-thought-out site? A baby-changing room and family shower areas are handy when bringing the whole clan along, while a supermarket under a 15-minute drive away in Halfway will have you sorted for ingredients to feed them with as well.
This is a site that's seen set up with accessibility in mind; an access guide is available for disabled visitors to find out whether what's on offer is suitable for their needs. And there's much for all guests to enjoy here: outdoors, the sensory garden’s a grand spot for resting as the kids clamber around a play area with views of Rother Valley Country Park’s main lake. Table tennis and table football are also set up in the open air, so guests can have a game or two when the weather’s decided to play ball.
If the rain holds off, this park’s in a fab location for explores. It’s on the borders of South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire with access to Sustrans National Route 6 and the Trans Pennine Trail to Chesterfield, Sheffield and Rotherham if walking and cycling’s your thing. Local attractions
Rother Valley Country Park’s lake is less than 20 minutes on foot from Waleswood with walking routes, a nature reserve and birdwatching to take in too. If you’re keen to get on the water, paddleboards, family boats and canoes are available to hire; for something different, water zorbing and windsurfing are organised here as well.
Bikes can also be borrowed for a fee, including mountain bikes, family bikes and accessible bikes. Want to up the pace? Group park runs are held on Saturday mornings and rounds on the greens can be had any time of the week at Rother Valley Golf Centre around a 10-minute drive away. If you’re wanting more of an easy-going time, you can pet resident animals like llamas at the farm or reel in a few fish at the lake.
Away from the country park, other animal-focused attractions in the area include Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife and Falconry Centre (15 minutes by car) and Yorkshire Wildlife Park (25 minutes). Gulliver's Valley theme park (20 minutes' walk) is another fab choice for days out with the kids.
To have a gander at stately buildings instead, Renishaw Hall and Gardens, Bolsover Castle and Wentworth Woodhouse are all less than a 30-minute drive from Waleswood.
